Chengdu (Chinese: 成都), known formerly as Chengtu, is the capital of Sichuan province, of Southwest China, maintaining sub-provincial administrative status. Chengdu is also one of the most important economic centres, transportation and communication hubs in Western China. According to the 2007 Public Appraisal for Best Chinese Cities for Investment, Chengdu was chosen as one of the top ten cities to invest in out of a total of 280 urban centers in China. More than four thousand years ago, the prehistorical Bronze Age culture of Jinsha (Chinese: 金沙; pinyin: Jīnshā) established itself in this region. The fertile Chengdu Plain, on which Chengdu is located, is called Tianfuzhi guo (simplified Chinese: 天府之国; pinyin: Tiānfǔzhi Guó) in Chinese, which literally means "the country of heaven", or more often seen translated as "the Land of Abundance". It was recently named China's 4th-most livable city by China Daily.(From Wikipedia)

World's Most Crowded Parking Lot Found in Chengdu

Cars here are parked with next to no space between them. You would think dents and dings are a big problem, but the people who work there say no way. It is an ordinary parking lot in southwest China's city of Chengdu, but it's also extraordinary in that its 5400-square-foot space is cramped, incredibly, with more than 70 vehicles, averaging 75 square feet per car. Cars are parked bumper to bumper at the parking lot located by the side of an office building near the Mozi Bridge. The 5400-square-foot parking lot has in fact about 50 parking spaces, but now accommodates more than 70 cars, according to lot staff. The staff navigate cars into spaces less that half an inch from other vehicles. "Only one scrape accident has occurred over the past year." Surrounded by several commercial buildings, the parking lot is situated in the downtown area where parking space is in dire shortage. The parking lot is set to be renovated soon.

A record number of independent candidates ran, yet they have complained of poor monitoring and intimidation by authorities. Over 70 Chinese independent candidates ran in Chengdu's city, district and county level elections on Monday. But the independent candidates are complaining that authorities are making things as hard as possible for them, in favor of Communist Party affiliated candidates. Independent Yan Tafeng says her district was split up into six voting stations, making it hard to monitor the process. Election officials also ended the voting early and were not transparent in the transportation of the ballot papers. [Yan Tafeng, Independent Candidate]: "It started at 7:30 and finished at 10:30, it was supposed to finish at 11:00. Our original secretary is now in the election team, he put the voting box into the trunk of a car and had it driven to another location. I asked him many times to disclose where, but he said he didn't know." Another independent candidate, Luo Keyin, also complained election officials are intimidating voters. [Luo Keyin, Independent Candidate]: "When I was voting, the clerk said to me, 'only choose from the three names at the top of the list.' The first rare footage of the new unique box-wing Xianglong stealth UAV, China's equivalent to the USAF's Global Hawk undergoing static tests. Up now, we have only seen it undergoing static RCS tests, giving doubts whether or not the Xianglong prototype may be real or just a prop. Now, we have confirmation of it being the real deal due to its engine roar. This was taken as "side-show" to an usual J-20 test-flight in Chengdu. So there is also the J-20 #2001 undergoing further testings, by the way.

Chinese Factory Workers Strike in Dalian and Chengdu

We begin today by looking at two factories in China, where workers are speaking out to protect their rights. Here's more. Chinese workers strikes are emerging one after another across China in the New Year. In the northeastern port city of Dalian, thousands of beer factory workers began a strike against low wages. Workers from five workshops in Snow Breweries stopped working and gathered in front of the company building on Thursday morning. The company was bought in February from Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev last year. Sources alleged that after the company was acquired, managers' wages had been upgraded to the standard of foreign-owned enterprises, but their workers' rights have long been neglected. Meanwhile, in the southwestern city of Chengdu, state-owned Pangang Steel workers walked out to protest last Wednesday. On Friday, on their third day protesting, local authorities deployed three thousand riot police to the scene to clear out the area around five o'clock in the afternoon. Some workers were arrested after being beaten up by armed police. Workers couldn't confront the authorities, so they had to start working again. The impressive Dartz Konbat debuted at the 2011 Chengdu Auto Show. Big car for Big people in Big traffic jams. Price tag is impressive as well: 9.18 million yuan or 1.44 million US dollar. The Dartz Kombat is bullet proof, 7cm full body armor, it weighs over three tons. Power comes from a 8.0 8-cylinder engine with 456hp, good for a 240km/h top speed. Very nice car indeed and it will likely sell like hell in China's rich big cities where a replacement for the popular Hummer is wished for by many.
