Chiang Mai : Temple, Culture, People

Thailand's "Rose of the North" is a cultural and natural wonderland with ethnic diversity, a multitude of attractions, and welcoming hospitality. Chiang Mai literally means "new city" and has retained the name despite celebrating its 700th anniversary in 1996. King Meng Rai the Great founded the city as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom on Thursday, April 12 1296 around the same time as the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. King Meng Rai even conferred with his friends, King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao before choosing the site where the capital of the Lanna Kingdom was to be founded. Henceforth, Chiang Mai not only became the capital and cultural core of the Lanna Kingdom, it was also to be the center of Buddhism in northern Thailand, King Meng Rai himself a very religious leader who even founded many of the city's temples that remain important to this day.

WW2 - Chiang Kai Shek

Chiang Kai Shek The death of Sun Yat Sen in March 1925 brought Chiang Kai Shek to prominence in China, and by 1928, after a series of bloody internal conflicts, Chiang Kai Shek became the effective dictator of China. Chiang's position was never completely secure. Throughout the war he was forced to divert large amounts of American aid to bolstering his power base and fighting the communists. The end of the War brought a resumption of the internal conflicts in China, and by 1950 Chiang and his supporters had been driven from the Chinese mainland onto the island of Formosa. en.wikipedia.org

Loy Krathong Festival in Chiang Mai 2009

The world famous Loy Krathong Festival in Thailand this year took place between 1st & 3rd of November 2009 with the main day being the Full Moon night of November 2nd! The Loy Krathong festival always takes place on the first full-moon night of the twelfth lunar month. The custom of placing hand-made floats decorated with flowers and candles on waterways is believed to go back over 700 years to the Sukhothai Historical Period ,which was the formulative period for what became Siam & today is modern day Thailand. The word Loy means to float and Krathong is a small vessel made from banana leaves which can float on water. A candle is placed in the krathong, along with incense sticks and small coins. A wish is then made and the krathong is sent floating down the river. This act is seen as a symbolic gesture of gratitude to the Mother River the source of water without which we could not survive. Thai belief is that floating the beautiful Krathong away also refers to sending away misfortune and bad things from the past and asking for good luck & fortune in the future. In Northern Thailand the Loy Krathong festival which is also known as Yee Peng is particularly spectacular & is celebrated for two nights under the full moon. The celebrations in & around Chiang Mai include the release of thousands of Khom Loys (paper hot air floating lanterns) into the night sky all over the city, this really is a not to be missed event and is the feature of the video above. The Night Train From Chiang Mai to Bangkok, Thailand

www.TravelsWithSheila.com Frequent trains make the long 14-hour journey from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and the most comfortable are the overnight trains. It's only a one-hour flight by plane between cities but serious budgeters take the train to save money and for the experience. Why 14 hours when an airplane flies the route in one hour? The train makes stop....after stop....after stop. No sooner do you fall asleep then the train lurches and screeches to yet another stop. Buy a hard seat ticket, soft seat, berth in a open second class compartment or a first class, two berth only compartment. Whichever you decide on, it is an "experience."

The Best Songkran HD Video - Chiang Mai, Thailand 2010 - The whole experience.

One of the high spots of the Thai calendar is the annual New Year celebration, or Songkran, which falls on or around April 13 and lasts for three days or more. These days, Songkran has turned into a water-throwing funfest, in which anyone and everyone is liable to get thoroughly drenched. Chiang Mai is without a doubt Thailand's leading venue for Songkran celebrations and is celebrated with enthusiasm and ceremony in this temple-studded city. With the streets packed around the moat, it is a bumper to bumper water fight. If your out and about in any way, you are going to get wet from the start of the day until the early evening. From warm Moat water to buckets of ice water and from hoses to water guns, you may not see it coming, but you are certainly gonna get hit. Songkran in Chiang Mai is one of the biggest parties of the year and they certainly don't hold back as you can see in this video! Shot entirely in HD. Enjoy. Amazing Thailand #12: Chiang Mai

Last chapter on the series "Amazing Thailand"! Chiang Mai ( เชียงใหม่ ), Lanna sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country. The city is on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river. In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and attracts approximately 1 million visitors each year. Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded here between the ASEAN nations and the "+3" countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai's historic importance derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trade routes. The city has long been a major center for hand-crafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving. While officially the city (thesaban nakhon) of Chiang Mai only covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province. Some of the touristic attraction in or around Chiang Mai include the Elephant Nature Park, the X-Centre (buggy, zorbing, kart, etc), Adventure Centre (river rafting, quad-bike/ATV ...

Yi Peng Festival Chiang Mai

The release of 5000 'kom loi's' (flying lanterns) is just part of this festival. The release is the culmination of a deeply moving experience. I had waited 10 months to see this festival. It is difficult to put a word to how it felt to be part of this evening of meditation and celebration, but 'joyous' comes close. It happens every year just before the full moon in November on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. On the full moon it's the Loy Kratong Festival ... wow what a party!
