SwimFin - Etienne proves that it really works! His first full length of a pool at 2 years old.

The SwimFin is fast becoming the world's leading swimming flotation device for children. Worn on the back, it doesn't restrict a child's movement unlike arm-bands and woggles. One of the great things about the SwimFin is that if you drop a child in water, the SwimFin automatically puts them into a standing upright position with their head out of the water. If the child is swimming and gets tired or into difficulty, they can simple stop what they are doing and the SwimFin will put them back into the same upright position. As the child gets more proficient the SwimFin does less and less until it is fully out of the water. However having the SwimFin on their back gives the child confidence. It's also a great TOY!

Toddler and Young Child Swimming Lessons in Madison

www.swimwest.com In the Little Snapper swimming lessons at SwimWest, we focus on getting your young child comfortable in the water. This class works and plays on beginner skills with assistance from the instructor in the water as well as a parent in the water. When your child's comfort grows, the parent will gradually transition out of the class into Angelfish. The Angelfish series of young child swimming lessons contain the same skills as Little Snapper with one important exception. Angelfish swim lessons are taught by an in-water instructor, the parent is not in the water. In Angelfish, skills include back floating with assistance, rollovers, jumping in to the instructor, climbing out of the pool, and putting their face in the water.

uSwim, level 2, skill 1 - Breath Control how to teach your child to swim, swimming lessons

Breath control The skill of controlling one's breath may seem obvious, yet it is amazing how many children are not taught this vital safety skill. Ingesting or breathing water into the lungs accelerates the drowning process and makes it more difficult for a child to swim to safety. This is why children should never ever be instructed to blow bubbles before they are old enough to learn 'freestyle breathing'. Blowing bubbles removes the air from the lungs making the child want to inhale, not good if the mouth is in the water. There are 4 easy steps to breath control 1. Taking a breath (inhaling) 2. Holding a breath with the mouth closed 3. Inhaling, holding and placing the face in the water, then exhaling. 4. Extending the time

Swimming with your baby

Parents used to be advised to wait until their baby had had their immunisations at two, three and four months before they took their babies swimming. But government health experts no longer believe this is necessary, so it's really up to you when you start taking your baby to the pool. "There are no medical grounds for waiting until your baby is immunised. However, most pools start classes at around 12 weeks," says Libby Tucker, a swimming teacher who specialises in parent and child courses. Remember too, that a noisy public swimming pool could be daunting for your newborn, so it may be worth waiting until he's a bit older. You will probably have to wait until you've had your six-week check before you can go yourself, anyway.

uSwim, level 3, skill 4 - how to teach my child Freestyle breathing, swimming lessons

Freestyle Breathing When first learning how to correctly breathe in the freestyle stroke, we recommend you only get your child breathing to the one side (either right or left), and keep it consistent. This is why we label each arm, one is the Breathing arm (the side that they breathe to), the other is the bubble arm (the side you can attach a bubble to as a reminder, as this is one skill we think an aid really helps). Later on down the track your swimmer will learn bi-lateral breathing or breathing on both the left and the right. There is no right or wrong to which side each child should breathe to, simply whichever side turns better and feels more comfortable to the swimmer. Once you have decided on which side to breathe, this skill will show you how to incorporate the breath into Beginner or Catch-up Freestyle. 4 easy steps to Catch-up breathing: 1. Select bubble arm 2. 6 kicks and breathe 3. Bubble arm, roll, breathing arm. 4. On board

uSwim, Level 3, Skill 2 - Beginner Freestyle arms how to teach your child to swim, swimming lessons

Beginner Freestyle This type of Freestyle is different to what you may see in the Olympics. Catch-up is when the hands meet each other after each stroke, so only one arm is moving at a time. The benefits of teaching catch-up freestyle before teaching Olympic (conventional) Freestyle or Australian Crawl are obvious to those who have done so. Young children find catch-up much easier to comprehend as they are only using one arm at a time. However more importantly, just like Torpedo kicking, catch-up freestyle prepares and strengthens a child's core region so the swimmer can develop a long, powerful freestyle stroke. When children are taught Olympic freestyle too early, the arms begin to thrash around the water and correct breathing technique become difficult to teach. *uSwim does not advocate catch-up for elite training or squad classes. 4 easy steps to Beginner Freestyle 1. Standing arms 2. 2. arms on shoulders 3. Arms on kickboard 4. Catch-up arms

arms baby swimming children swim how to teach learn school classes lesson kids water safety lessons free infant online instructors my child babies kid class learning toddlers teacher become instructor coach accreditation certification do it yourself

uSwim, Level 3, skill 6 - Freestyle how to teach your child to swim Freestyle swimming lessons

Freestyle (front crawl) Making the transition from Beginner Freestyle to Olympic Freestyle is not hard. In this skill we will make sure our swimmer can do correct Catch-up (beginner), and then teach him/her to begin changing the arms so the stroke will begin to resemble the freestyle you see in the Olympics. Once your swimmer gets the basic action, we then provide you with drills that will refine the stroke, build stamina and increase strength. uSwim advocates the use of flippers as a tool. Flippers allow the swimmer to concentrate on arm technique because it improves the efficiency of each kick, helping to maintain momentum. Teachers should be careful children do not become dependent on flippers and lazy with their kicks. 4 easy steps to Olympic freestyle: 1. Catch-up 2. Freestyle 3. Flippers 4. Training drills

uSwim, Level 1, Skill 2 - Front Floating how to teach your baby to swim, swimming lessons

Skill 2 -- Front Float Once your child has been conditioned to take a breath and you both are comfortable being in a pool, front floating is the next step. A big mistake is trying to submerge or dunk children underwater, which only frightens them and actually increases the chance they will ingest water. Instead a slow, gradual approach of floating with the face in the water in needed. Watch the holds and placement of the hands carefully, this is crucial.

This is AMAZING! Babies are taught to flip over and float if they fall into a pool fully clothed. This would save tons of lives. This video is for a new survival course for infants and todlers from YMCA. These courses have saved babies from drowning all over Florida.
