PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 3, 2011) Chilean submariners from CS Carrera (SS 22) along with the US Navy's Deep Submerging Unit (DSU), participate in exercise CHILEMAR III off the coast of Southern California. CHILEMAR is an annual bilateral exercise between the US and Chile, which is designed to demonstrate interoperability between US submarine rescue systems and Chilean submarines. An unprecedented rescue operation is underway to free the miners who've been stuck 600 metres underground for over two months. Osman Araya - who tried to warn managers of safety in the mine before the accident - has become the sixth to reach the surface. They're being greeted with loud cheers and tearful reunions with their families; as well as being given protective glasses and taken to hospital. The miners are being brought to the surface via a 21-inch-wide capsule that's freeing one miner every hour.

The ordeal of 33 trapped Chilean miners is finally over after the 24-hour operation to bring them to the surface. The shift supervisor was the last to be freed. They'd spent more than two months trapped underground, following a rockfall. All 33 emerged safely - and in much better physical condition than had been expected. On August 5, 2010, an underground rock collapse isolated 33 miners in the San Jose Mine in northern Chile. By virtue of an aggressive drilling program, they were located, all alive, in an underground refuge. Eventually all 33 were brought successfully to the surface one-by-one in a steel capsule. This talk describes the mine and the nature of the cave-in, how the miners were located, and how they were eventually brought to surface. The rescue was not only a humanitarian feat but a triumph for earth engineering. The geoengineering issues associated with the mine were critical to the management decisions made, and we will explain why the hammer drilling that reached the miners was so successful. The lecture is illustrated with images from the mine site before and during the rescue, as well as with geological and engineering illustrations explaining the various actions that took place. President Piñera was at the mouth of the whole to greet him, as well. Ávalos is the first of 33 miners to escape from under roughly 2300 feet of rock. Local television stations in Chile are reporting that church bells and fire stations alarms are ringing throughout the country.
