Chile Travel Guide - Beautiful Valaparaiso (Chile)

This is the world's oldest Spanish newspaper in circulation. And where is it printed? Right here, in Chile's port city, Valparaiso. Located 120 kilometers from Santiago, Valparaiso's population is about a quarter of a million. Valparaiso gained worldwide attention in the 19th century when it was a major port for sea trade between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Later, much of that activity shifted to the Panama Canal. Valparaiso is still Chile's main port, but the reason you want to come here is because it is one of Chile's most picturesque and unique cities. The house are set up along the serros, or hills, and they are painted in bright color. We are going to walk up and check out the beautiful view at the top. It is not easy, considering that some hills at a 45 degree angle. All right. So I just made it to the top. It is an exhausting climb, but the view is well worth it. If you do not want to walk up the steep hill, you can take the elevator, or ascensore, for only a 100 pesos. There are 15 elevators, or funiculars, all around Valaparaiso and they are all declared world monuments. During your walk you will come across some beautiful mansions, as well as some more modest homes. This building is Municipal Museum of belas artes, or fine arts, it is old, beautiful and unique. Chile's Nobel Prize-winning poet, Pablo Neruda, has one of his house right here, in Valaparaiso. It is called Casa Museo la Sebastiana. Right now I am in front of Hotel Gran Gervasoni. So I was alone in a bar in Valdivia when a video came on the rockola that gave inspiration to a bored solo traveler. The result, for better or for worse, is this video. It begins in Patagonia and works north to Valdivia, Frutillar, Santiago and some beach areas not far from there. I have always hated this song. Quiero dedicar este video a todos los weones y weonas que me acompañaron en este viaje increible.

El Parron, Santiago (Chile) - Travel Guide

A restaurant known for grilled meat in the Providencia neighborhood of Santiago. Location: Providencia Address: Av. Providencia 1184 Restaurant El Parron is located in the heart of the neighborhood, Providencia. In Spanish, Parron means great great wine and the main dinning hall is covered with it. And it has room for nine hundred people. Now I am going to try the Chilean bina. That is great, it is very smooth and I can feel the ginger in it. The Kitchen at El Parron has windows, so you can see your food while it is being cooked. El Parron has specialized in grill meat called, Pereira since nineteen thirty six. The Pereira has pork, steak, sausage, inas and potatoes, when you try the pereira, you must be careful. It is served in it is own little barbecue, which is hot. Here we are with Miguel, he is going to join me for a typical Chilean dinner. "Tonight I am eating a traditional Chilean dish "pure picante" with ribs. It is delicious, especially with red wine." "Is it spicy?" "Only moderately but very good." Now, I am going to try some steak. Which is called Pla Tierra in Spanish, the steak is in mushroom sauce and it is accompanied with a side dish of rice. This meat is so tender, you can cut it with a fork, chumchuli, a type of sausage. And thenyas. It is not very tender, it is a big top but the special thing about it is that, it is very tasty. You can taste the real beef. "Yes, a reservation is recommended."I am Helia Goodman showing you Santiago.

Chilean Restaurant, Valparaiso (Chile) - Travel Guide

Traditional Chilean seafood on a boat restaurant in Valparaiso. Other Information: Restaurant Featured Caleta Portales Phone: (56)625614 Caleta Portales is a restaurant specializing in seafood right on the beach front. The restaurant has excellent views of the beach and the city. "We have chosen to focus on traditional food." I have a lot of seafood before me. It is over whelming, so we are going to take this step by step. This is an appitizer called jardin de la mariscos, or garden of seafood. It has ten types of cold seafood. Shrimp, choitos, crab, locos, kikoroko, oysters, machas, chivicha de covina, the white fish cooked in lemon juice with onion and biute', which is considered an afrodesiac, because it is very high on iodine. Many of these are only found on the Chilean coast. That is why there is no translation. "The Seafood Garden (Jardin de Mariscos), is delicious but my favorite is the grilled seafood (Parrillada de Mariscos). It has oysters, shrimp, kalamari, machas, kikoroko, choritos and locos. For the fish we has salmon and marloosa, another Chilean type of seafood. Now we are going to try combia bortalias, which is the specialty of the house. It is a white fish in a seafood sauce with mushrooms and shrimp. As always, you must accompany seafood with a delicious white wine. And Chile has many. At Caleta Portales, the drink of the house is Bisto Sour. The special recipe they prepare with lime. That really makes a difference. This ship sails everyday from twelve ...

Mercado Central, Santiago (Chile) - Travel Guide

See where the locals go for fresh seafood. Right now we are at Mercado Central, or Central Market. Which is the best place to get seafood. We are only 3 blocks away from Plaza De Armas in the heart of downtown. Look at the fancy iron work. This building is over 100 years old. But the seafood, no more than a day. Chile is famous for its seafood and there is much more than Chilian sea bass. See that big fish? That's a Chilian sea bass and the fish is actually coming out of his mouth. Here we have giant squid. Or in Spanish Jibia. You can find machas also. Shell fish. You do not believe it is fresh? Look it still has its last dinner in its mouth. What we have here is Picalocos. It is a type of shell fish and it is still alive. You can find it in the Finda Marina which is a Chlian type of soup, that has all the seafood you could imagine. Here we have king crab or in Spanish, centoya. Very expensive and hard to find. This is adjeso. You can find this prepared here in Chile with lemon, onion and some herbs or they can make a souffle out of it. When they come to the market they are still alive and they have these interesting spines on them. This is what we call locos. You can find it here at the market. Usually it is supposed to be boiled with some mayonnaise. And it is delicious. Here we have beute, it is really high on iodine and it is a vitamin rush. On the sides of the market, next to the seafood stands, you can find some cheaper restaurants. Be warned, tons of waiters and ...

Entry from: Santiago, Chile Entry Title: "Across the Andes by double decker bus" Entry: "We were out of luck again with the weather. It was grey and cloudy when we awoke. Our views of the Andes were going to be disappointing. We had booked a seat with CATA International Buses leaving at 10.30 am and we had the two front seats on the top deck, for optimum views of the mountains. We were soon out of Mendoza and heading for the hills which were unfortunately shrouded in cloud. We started to climb gradually and some blue sky appeared. Then some more blue sky appeared and before we knew it, we had a brilliantly clear sky and sunshine. The views became more and more spectacular as we travelled through the rocky landscape. A disused rail track wound its way up alongside the road and we marvelled at the building of such a route. I was in my element, taking far too many photos from our front row seats. Many however were spoiled by the sun causing reflections on the windows. We passed quite close to Aconcagua, the highest peak on the American continent, 6960m. It was one of only a few mountains we passed with snow on at this time of year. We were served coffee and biscuits after an hour or so, and then at about 1.00 pm we reached the top of the pass and the Argentina / Chile border. It was only when we got off ...

Entry from: Uyuni, Chile Entry Title: "Salar de Uyuni - Bolivian Salt Flats" Entry: "Right this was a 2 night/3day tour which we started from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)and finished in Uyuni (Bolivia). We got bus to the Bolivan border (check out Enda at the very offical looking official border!) where we had breakfast with our bus driver and checked into Bolivia. When you get your passport stamped you have to pay the police an entrance fee (totally illegal but wide spread practice) to get into their country. Mind you it was only 30 Boliviano (3euro) so its not too bad. Then once breakie is eaten your bus driver leaves and you get into your jeep with your driver for the tour. Our driver was called Teo, our guide called Alberto, and our chef called Leonora. In our jeep was myself & Enda, the two Irish girls-Kim & Niamh, the driver Teo and Alberto. The other jeep had 6 other tourists, their driver and Leonora the chef. The joury is over 500km but is broken up by stops at scenic sights and 2 over night stays. The sights on first day included: Various differnt lagoons, blue, green and white lagoon. The Laguna Verde (green lagoon) was most intersting of all. It was joined to the white lagoon by a wee stream...but for only one hour each day, between 10am-11am the water in the Laguna Verde changes to ...
