Puyehue volcano continued to erupt on Monday, billowing smoke and ash high into the sky. The volcano in the Caulle Cordon mountain range began erupting violently on Saturday afternoon. Lightning in the rising cloud provided a dazzling display. The eruption has forced more than 3500 people living nearby to evacuate, but there are no reports of any injuries.

At least 25000 university student protesters have marched through the streets of Santiago, Chile's capital, calling for reforms in education, local news reported. Police fired water cannons to disperse demonstrators, after some students broke through police barricades and others hurled stones at anti-riot officers. Fifteen people were arrested, according to authorities. The students have been pushing the government for years to boost funding in a country with among the highest university fees in the world. Chilean university students receive only 15 percent state funding, the lowest of all countries part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. When taking into consideration the average family income in Chile, university fees are nearly three times higher than the United States, Japan, and Australia. Chile's president Sebastian Pinera has promised more scholarships and said that debt for 100000 poor students would be recalculated, amongst other reforms, but student leaders say it is not enough. "Today we are calling for the recovery of public education, equal access to education, quality, greater financing in the sector and, as always, regulation of the private sector and with greater involvement of the state to improve education to stop putting thousands and thousands of families into debt. An unprecedented rescue operation is underway to free the miners who've been stuck 600 metres underground for over two months. Osman Araya - who tried to warn managers of safety in the mine before the accident - has become the sixth to reach the surface. They're being greeted with loud cheers and tearful reunions with their families; as well as being given protective glasses and taken to hospital. The miners are being brought to the surface via a 21-inch-wide capsule that's freeing one miner every hour.

The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Cold War. On 11 September 1973, the democratically elected President Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup d'état organised by the Chilean military. A military junta took control of the government, composed of the heads of the Air Force, Navy, Carabineros (police force) and the Army led by General Augusto Pinochet.[1] Pinochet later assumed power and ended Allende's democratically elected Popular Unity government.[2][3] During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech where he vowed to stay in the presidential palace.[4] Direct witness accounts of his death agree that he committed suicide in the presidential palace.[5][6] After the coup Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990 and that was marked by severe human rights violations. A weak insurgence movement against the Pinochet government was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government.

Two cheeky Czechs have launched a campaign aimed at gathering writing implements for the country's President Václav Klaus. In doing so, they express their support to the leader, who has recently found himself in an embarrassing situation. Vaclav Klaus was captured on video stealing a protocol pen during his official meeting with his Chilean counterpart Sebastián Piñera on Tuesday. The story caused a stir in the Czech Republic. Czech television broadcast the video with red circles and arrows highlighting the pen. A spokesman for Klaus on Tuesday dismissed the media storm caused by the video, saying the pen was "a common pen with a logo of the state or office, which presidents and members of their delegation receive during state visits". In fact, the pens are encrusted with semi-precious Chilean lapiz lazuili stones. However, a Pinera spokeswoman said the president's guests were free to take them.

Two airports in the south of Chile remained closed on Thursday and Chile's main airline said it could cancel more flights depending on the direction taken by the ash spewed by the Cordon Caulle volcano. Lan Chile has cancelled all flight going and departing from Temuco and Valdivia airports. Following a change in wind direction, ash has also arrived in other areas in southern Chile previously unaffected such as Villarrica and Pucon. A reconnaissance flight by the Chilean Air Force provided new footage showing that the volcano is still spewing large clouds of ash.

The ordeal of 33 trapped Chilean miners is finally over after the 24-hour operation to bring them to the surface. The shift supervisor was the last to be freed. They'd spent more than two months trapped underground, following a rockfall. All 33 emerged safely - and in much better physical condition than had been expected. But they're still being given thorough checks in hospital.
