Chimpanzee Problem Solving by Cooperation

A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, demonstrating problem solving skills in chimpanzees, by requesting cooperation. Also shows chimpanzees providing assistance to humans, by noticing assistance is needed, and retrieving out of reach objects for their human companions. As time goes on, it becomes more and more obvious that the great apes are our evolutionary cousins. I would hope everyone viewing this would be able to share in my astonishment and awe at the brilliance displayed by these amazing creatures. Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2)

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING -- Link to Part 2: youtube.com A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, comparing how a chimpanzee learns when compared with human children. An experiment conducted at St Andrews University revealed that while children tried to tackle a puzzle without trying to analyze it, chimps of the same age used logic and managed to solve it This test shows that the human child, even when given tasks that obviously have no meaning, follows the instructions given to them by the perceived authority figure, whereas the chimpanzees are more pragmatic, and exclude the extraneous steps. I feel that this is a good example of why it is important to raise children to believe as many true things and disregard as many false things as possible. Children are our shared future, and teaching them to think critically and rationally, so they can grow up to be mindful, effective adults that use reason to help build a better world is vitally important. Article from the Sunday Times: "Young chimps make chumps of children" www.timesonline.co.uk NOTE: This is a dramatic reenactment of an experiment for a TV documentary. The actual experiment criteria: ** The children used ranged from 41-59 months. ** The chimps used ranged from 2-6 yo Chimps mature at 13-14 for females, 15-16 for males. ** The box always contains a sticker. When the child gets the sticker, they trade that in for a food reward. ** The child is instructed to get the ...

Chimpanzees freed after 30 Years as Lab Animals

This is the moment a group of chimpanzees sees daylight for the first time in 30 years - after being locked in cages for medical testing. The animals hugged each other in delight before they took their first steps outside. Emotional footage, below, shows how they reacted to their new surroundings. The outing marked the end of a 14-year bid to re-integrate the 38 primates after they spent most of their lives cooped up inside.

Lab Chimps Play in the Sun for the First Time

Lab Chimps Play in the Sun for the First Time. These monkeys were caged/kept indoors their entire lives and have finally been allowed outside to play. Narration translation: Woman Narrator: They see for the first time in their lives, the sun. After decades in an experiment laboratory, this is the first step of the chimpanzees in to freedom. Man Narrator: They hugged each other, like they would say they were finally free. And then they laughed. One imagines being locked up for 30 years in an elevator, then to open the door with friends and say "I don't believe it." They have only seen people wearing protective clothing; they have never had regular contact. They never learned to climb, because they were brought to the laboratory as babies. Now they can finally get out. Woman Narrator: Most of the former 38 monkeys have spent the entire lives behind bars. Since 2002, they are now in an Austrian village, slowing being prepared a life in freedom. This moment was for both animal and people equally unique. Man Narrator: I saw a chimpanzee, who was starring completely fascinated at a butterfly. He knew it, from back when he was a small chimpanzee in the jungle, and now he can see them again. Woman Narrator: And the monkeys that were born in the laboratory are discovering everything for the first time. The air, the grass, the freedom.

Chimpanzee Cognition: Beats humans at memory task

Ayumu, a young Chimpanzee has learned the order of the arabic numerals, and outperforms humans on a short-term memory task. Wikipedia: A 30-year study at Kyoto Universitys Primate Research Institute has shown that chimps are able to learn to recognize the numbers 1-9 and their values. The chimps further show an aptitude for photographic memory, demonstrated in experiments in which the jumbled digits 1-9 are flashed onto a computer screen for less than a quarter of a second, after which the chimp, Ayumu, is able to correctly and quickly point to the positions where they appeared in ascending order. The same experiment was failed by world memory champion Ben Pridmore on most attempts.

Louise du Toit - SAVE THE CHIMPANZEES

JANE GOODALL wrote the following: "Human beings are not standing in isolated splendor on a pinnacle, separated from the rest of the animal kingdom by an unbridgeable chasm. Chimpanzees - especially those who have learned a human language - help us intellectually to bridge the imagined chasm. This crossing gives us a new respect not only for chimpanzees but for all the other amazing animals with whom we, the human animal, share this planet." Chimpanzees share more than 98 percent of the genetic code of humans. They are beautiful, sensitive and social beings with a high intelligence, a distinct culture and a language. They use tools and educate their offspring. They plan their future and take moral decisions. And yet, humans exploit them in the most disdainful and cruelest ways.
