Algonquin College. Exam week can be stressful on students. Inspired by the Christmas Food Court Flash Mob, Hallelujah Chorus, the Television Broadcasting students at Algonquin College wanted to showcase the new Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence by lightening the mood with the help of the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir and Darth Vader. On June 21, 2011, the entire Mormon Tabernacle Choir performed a flash mob (starts at ~3:20) during a Revolutionary City program on Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area. www.operaphila.org -- On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years. The initiative transports the classical arts out of the concert halls and opera houses and into our communities to enrich our everyday lives. www.simpson.edu It's a cold, gray December day in Iowa, and you're stuck at the mall, trying to elbow past all the other shoppers to find that perfect gift for the relative you only see once a year. Suddenly, you hear the beginning notes of, "The Hallelujah Chorus" play over the mall's sound system. It's much louder than the normal Christmas music. You look around. Young people -- 100 in all -- are removing their coats, revealing their Simpson College T-shirts and sweatshirts. And they begin to sing, filling the mall with their glorious voices. That was the scene Sunday at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, where members of the Simpson College choir (along with a few alumni, faculty and staff members) conducted a "Flash Mob" in the middle of the busy shopping season. Hundreds of shoppers at Central Market got a glorious surprise Saturday morning when at least 125 people around them suddenly began singing the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah." At 9:30 am a mass of people, many wearing Santa hats and reindeer antlers, found their way to the center of market and suddenly, the opening chords of the "Hallelujah Chorus" filled the air and voices rose in unison to sing the Christmas classic. Commerce pretty much came to a halt for the next four minutes as standholders and shoppers stopped to listen and possibly join in. Central Market had its very first flash mob.
