In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast... A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. This clip is of their reunion at that time. It was an emotional reunion: "He ran towards us, threw himself onto us, knocked us over and hugged us, with his paws on our shoulders." You'll find this video to be as heartwarming as it is inspiring, reminiscent of rare privileges of a past time and an even rarer moment between humans and animals. Emotional reunion The main part of the film shown on YouTube was shot the following day, when Bourke and Rendall went into the bush to attempt to see their old friend. There are two men in flared jeans and shaggy hair, and there is a lion. The huge carnivore approaches from a distance, slowly at first. Then recognition sets in, and soon everyone - men and beast - are hugging and crying. Christian even brings one of the lionesses in his pride over to meet his former roommates. The Daily Mail story reports that the lioness was clearly not happy with Christian's two-legged friends, and Adamson told Rendall and Bourke that it was time to leave. They went back to the camp, and Christian went with them, staying up late into the night as the humans partied with their friend. The next day Christian walked back into the bush, where his lionesses were waiting. He was never seen again - but the power of the Internet guarantees that he will never be forgotten.

But all good things must end and keeping a growing lion in the centre of London became untenable. This took place in 1972, about a year after the first reunion seen in the now-famous video. John Rendall and Ace Bourke went back to Kenya to visit Christian one last time. Accompanying them is George Adamson, a former game warden and lion keeper who was originally entrusted with reintroducing Christian to the wild. Now a formidable 500 pounds, Christian clearly dictated the terms of the meeting, but had clearly lost none of his affection for his ex-owners. Not long afterwards, Christian moved out of the area and was not heard from again. It is our hope that he was able to live out his natural life. EDIT: According to Adamson's book "My Pride and Joy", this was not the last time they saw each other. John Rendall would meet Christian, who had grown to record size and sired his own pride, once more in 1974. (Thanks to usasportswarrior for this information)

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST I've found a lot of Christian the Lion videos on youtube and I like every single one of them. I decided to make my own because I thought 'Hoppíppolla' by Sigur Rós would be the perfect song for this special story. I hope you like the video and song as much as I do. The Story: In 1969, John Rendall and Ace Berg saw a lion cub for sale in Harrods. Cramped and lonely in a small cage, they decided to bring it home. A local vicar allowed them to exercise the cub, now named Christian, in the curch grounds but he very quickly became too big for their flat. The only thing they could do was try and reintroduce him to Africa, which they managed to do. A year later they wanted to visit him but were told that he was now the head of his own pride, completely wild and would not recognize them anymore. They went anyway. This video shows the beginning of their friendship, the succesful reintroducing to the wild and also their reunion a year later.
