Fingerstyle Cittern--Jig & Reel

Joseph Sobol plays a jig and reel on a Sobell 10-string cittern: "Willie Coleman's" (jig) and "Over the Moor to Maggie" (reel). Recorded at ZoukFest, Taos, NM, June, 2001.
my electric cittern

see it in action at uk.youtube.com A short video of the electric cittern I've made, with me playing the Irish tune Star of Munster and having a bit of a noodle to give an idea of the instrument's range. I've had a Fylde cittern since about 2001, and though it's a very fine instrument, it's designed imho from a guitarist's perspective, rather than a cittern player's and is SO prone to feedback. So, the only option was to design one from the ground up. I thought about a semi solid, but abandoned that as too complex for a first build. I then thought about skeletal, like Violectra fiddles-again too complex as the string tension in a cittern is generally about 90kg. So, I settled on the final design, which draws some functional inspiration from the Parker Fly. It was a long haul that filled the house with sawdust, but I am really happy with it. The pickup combination of an undersaddle strip and a switchable single coil/humbucker, both EMG active units is incredible-any sound you could wish for and zero noise. I'm very pleased with its'playability-way easier than the Fylde-12" radius fingerboard, wide frets and shorter scale length of 578mm all help. And so, the next thing is to get on and make music with it :-) Footnote 1) I'm not an instrument maker, but a musician, and i'd probably need a lot of persuading to make one for someone else. If however you're embarking on building something similar for yourself, and would like any detailed info, just ask. Footnote 2) the bodhran <b>...</b>

Scott Baker - Cittern Promo

Scott is playing a Renaissance Cittern made in the North of England, by NW Brook. This instrument was popular during the Tudor and Jacobean eras with the aristocratic amateur, and was later used in Barber shops to pass the time waiting! The Cittern had a scary looking clown/jester's head carved on the end of the headstock. Shakespeare used it as an insult, "cittern head!" in Love's Labour's Lost! This instrument had it's own repertoire and could be used to accompany broadside ballad singing. Scott is playing dances by Anthony Holbourne and from the Matthew Holmes Mss. The Renaissance Cittern is not to be confused with modern folk instrument of the same name. Also guest staring: My knee!

www.danteferrara.co.uk The Wager (William Ellis, 1652) from the CD Bazimakoo by Dante Ferrara Lyrics: My lady and her maid, upon a merry pin, They made a match at farting, who should the wager win. Joan lights three candles then, and sets them bolt upright. With the first fart she blew them out, with the next she gave them light. In comes my lady then, with all her might and mane, And blew them out and in and out and in and out again. Music Copyright Dante Ferrara 2007 Video Copyright Adam Verity

Lawrence Nyberg Cittern (10-string octave mandolin/mandola/bouzouki) Review

This is a 10-string mid-scale (23") octave mandolin/bouzouki, which some also call a cittern. It was built by Lawrence Nyberg (www.guitarmaker.ca), a skilled and capable luthier from British Columbia, Canada. It features Amazon Rosewood (I say "redwood" in the clip but it's just because I'm nervous...that camera thing) back and sides, a gorgeous Engelmann spruce top, and some cool and elegant features. And the sound! I've only been playing since last August so I don't do it justice, but I hope to some day. It's tuned DGDAE and sounds even better in person. THANKS, Lawrence!
"Fitting the Shoemaker" Scottish Renaissance Cittern Music

Mark Wheeler plays examples from his workshop in the Spring 2010 Lute Society Of America Quarterly "Fitting the Shoemaker". "The Shoemaker" is a scottish fiddle tune that was popular in the 17th century. His arrangement is based on the surviving versions of the piece in the Guthrie Fiddle manuscript, John Playford's "Apollo's Banquet", Waterson Keyboard Manuscript and also includes the tunes "Peggie is over ye Sie Wi'ye Souldier" from the Skene Mandora manuscript & "The Virgin Queen" from John Playford's "The Dancing Master". The cittern was built by Peter Forrester. A recording of this piece is available on the Pantagruel CD "Laydie Louthians Lilte" available from www.pantagruel.de

18th Century Scottish Guitar or Cittern

Three pieces from Bremner's Instructions for the Guitar, Edinburgh, 1758. The instrument was often called the guittar (correct spelling) or cetra, ie a cittern, and is often today called the English Guitar. Bremner published the first book for it, and he arranged many traditional pieces. The tuning from the bass to the treble is CEGceg, but I probably have it tuned a tone lower as that's where it seems to resonate best. It is strung with harpsichord strings - thanks to Grant O'Brien and Darryl Martin. More info and free scores: www.RMguitar.info

Fylde Cittern - the Swedish Jig

I got a new Fylde Cittern a few days ago; 10 strings, count em! In this clip it's tuned GCGCG, but I've been using GDGDG too. Still getting to grips with them, they're very different to bouzouki tunings I'm more used to. I may change it to something like DADAD soon. Like the season finale of House, this was shot on a 5d MkII. Sadly, it's not as gripping.
Fingerstyle Cittern Lesson: Jig Technique

Here's a lesson from fingerstyle cittern master Joseph Sobol on how to play an Irish jig with fingerstyle technique, incorporating melody, harmony, and Irish-style ornamentation, on a 10-string (5 course) instrument tuned GDGDG. Recorded at Zoukfest 2001 in Taos, New Mexico.

4 Course Cittern

A cittern was a fretted and wire strung medieval instrument which survived into the late baroque period before being replaced by the mandolin family. Rob MacKillop had some tabs for a 17th century 4 course cittern on his website, so I thought I'd try it out. Naturally, that means I'd have to buy or make a cittern. So I went back to Home Depot and picked up some wood. Italian tuning is b,g,d,e, but I think that's for a 14 inch scale length, and mine came out to be 18.5 inch with heavy mandola strings, so I rough tuned it down to about e,c,g,a by ear. The first bridge had too much buzz, so I made a second bridge which seems to be an improvement.

Sumurun - by Helen Marshall (Nikos Apollonio Bell Cittern) - Dracapalley

'Sumurun' is a piece inspired by a beautiful 94' yacht by the same name, built in 1914 in Fairlie, Ayrshire, Scotland. She has a pretty romantic history, too much to write here so please check out the website if interested: www.sumurun.com My bell cittern was made by outstanding luthier (and boatbuilder), Nikos Apollonio. The English oak used to make it was offcuts from that used to refurbish Sumurun. So, in a sense the same cut of wood has breathed life into boat and cittern alike. Perhaps this makes them sisters... or half sisters! It's a truly wonderful instrument; the oak is unusual and gives a massive and beautiful sustain that I've never heard on any stringed instrument of this size. Such a warm and rich tone, with a sumptuous Western red cedar top. I feel very priveledged to own something so precious. Thank you, Nikos. Special thanks to Armin Fischer for kindly permitting me to reproduce photographs of Sumurun for this video. Many thanks as well to Pascal Gademer 'SandBARhopper' and Naomi Sarasola http for so kindly allowing me to use both film footage of Sumurun and photographs in the fog. Particularly, thank you for getting these to me at such late notice and with break-neck speed, so that I may be able to upload in time still to dedicate this as a birthday present of sorts! Happy Birthday, Nikos! xxx

Relaxing outside the studio (again) with a Path Hathway Cittern. English maker. All 'round nice chap. I used this Cittern on Above You on the album The Light - see www.viewutopia.com/music to hear the piece. The jam I'm playing here has some lyrics to it also - Shakespeare 'Jog on, Jog on' and a few lines about a lake (don't know where that came from in the subconscious! It might appear on an album before the end of the year.

Cittern Brad Original Tunes

Filmed in Japan Yokota AB, Both tunes that he plays are original tunes. The cittern or cither is a stringed instrument of the guitar family dating from the Renaissance. Its name derives ultimately from the Iranian se - tar or "three strings" (see setar). Its flat-back design was simpler and cheaper to construct than the lute. It was also easier to play, smaller, less delicate and more portable. Played by all classes, the cittern was a premier instrument of casual music making much as is the guitar. The name "cittern" has also been applied in the late twentieth century to a number of variant members of the mandolin family, for which see below.
Bach Cello Suite II - Courante Cittern/Piano Improv, "jazzCittern"

Cittern improvisation on The Bach Cello Suite II - Courante with a piano accompaniment, extended but true to the changes Bach implied. We fondly call this "jazzCittern". The cittern, with its fifths tuning (CGDAE) is perfect for improvisation over jazz-like chord changes. (More info at www.jazzCittern.com) Think of New Standard Tuning on guitar as a cittern with a high G string added. Or a full-fifths tuned guitar as a cittern with a high B string added.
