Greek Battlefield: Video of Athens clashes with police

Greek anger over new austerity measures and layoffs erupted into violence outside parliament on Wednesday, as demonstrators hurled chunks of marble and gasoline bombs and riot police responded with tear gas and stun grenades that echoed across Athens' main square. Police said at least 14 officers were hospitalised with injuries, and at least three journalists covering the demonstrations sustained minor injuries. The violence spread across the city centre, as at least 100-thousand people marched through the Greek capital on the first day of a two-day general strike that unions described as the largest protest in years. Most of the protesters marched peacefully, but crowds outside of parliament clashed with police who tried to disperse them with repeated rounds of tear gas. Hundreds of rioting youths smashed and looted stores in central Athens on Wednesday after the mass anti-government rally against the new painful austerity measures. Police and rioters held running battles through the narrow streets of central Athens, as thick black smoke from burning rubbish and bus-stops set ablaze filled the city's skyline and obscured its ancient monuments. A gasoline bomb set fire to a presidential guard sentry post at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside Parliament, while running clashes broke out in several side streets near the legislature and the capital's main Syntagma Square. Masked youths clash with police as pension reform protests get radical in France

Masked youths clashed with police and set fires in cities across France on Tuesday as protests against a proposed hike in the retirement age took an increasingly radical turn. President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to crack down on "troublemakers" and guarantee public order, raising the possibility of more confrontations with young rioters after a week of disruptive but largely nonviolent demonstrations. More than 200 protests and one-day strikes by workers in sectors across the French economy were planned around the country over a bill raising the retirement age to 62. In many cities, protesters were being joined by young people who appeared to be seizing an opportunity to lash out at police. Protests turned violent in the central city of Lyon, where rioters smashed several store windows and torched rubbish bins and cars. Police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse trouble makers.

Crowds clash with police in Belarus on heels of 'unfair' presidential vote

Dozens of people were arrested and many were hospitalized with injuries as protesters clashed with police in Belarus capital Minsk the night following the date of presidential elections. While a preliminary ballot count indicates that incumbent president Lukashenko has won by a landslide, receiving almost 80 percent of votes from those cast by around seven million voters, the elections were marred by a night of riots that were, however, successfully suppressed by the police and the national security agency. The protest rally, planned by opposition well ahead of the elections day, started at about 8pm on Sunday. Various sources gave very different information about the number of participants, from 5-20000 people. At some point, the protesters tried to break into the building of the lower house of the parliament, which also serves as an office for the Central Elections Commission. Some windows were broken, but police intervened and forced the protesters from the square. Many people, including some of the opposition candidates, were arrested. Some people, including one presidential candidate and several journalists, both from Belarus and abroad, sustained injuries in the clashes. Police claim that about 30 officers were injured on Sunday night and had to be taken to hospitals. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

The security forces have cracked down on peaceful protesters and used tear gas to disperse them resulting in the injury of many protesters. UK police clash with student protesters [Dec 9, 2010]

British police clash with student protesters as tens of thousands gathered in central London to denounce government plans to increase university tuition fees. As the parliament began voting on higher tuition fees, tens of thousands of students were marching through central London towards Parliament Square, a Press TV correspondent reported. Scotland Yard said that police have arrested just several protesters and that there were no reports of injuries. Scotland Yard said in a statement that their "kettling" strategy to contain protesters "has been necessary to put in a containment in Parliament Square due to the level of violence officers are faced with". "Missiles including flares, sticks, snooker balls and paint balls have been aimed at police", added the statement.
