An Introduction to Clicker Training

From Virginia Broitman and Sherri Lippman's The How of Bow Wow, this clear overview of clicker training gives you the basics in just one minute! From the ClickFlicks Learning Center. www.clickertraining.tv "Clicker training" is the popular term for the training or teaching method based on what we know about how living organisms learn. Research has shown that any creature—whether a dog, cat, dolphin, parrot, fish, horse, llama, or person—is more likely to learn and repeat actions that result in consequences it desires and enjoys. So clicker trainers provide consequences desired by their animal in exchange for actions or behaviors desired by their trainers. We call these consequences "rewards" and the process is called "reinforcement." Clicker training, therefore, is a positive-reinforcement-based system of training. First widely used by dolphin trainers who needed a way to teach behavior without using physical force, operant conditioning (the scientific term for clicker training) can be and has been successfully employed with animals of all sizes and species, both domesticated and wild, young and old; all breeds of dogs and puppies, cats, birds, leopards, rats, rabbits, chinchillas, fish, and more. Clicker trainers who learn the underlying principles have at their disposal a powerful set of tools that enable them to analyze behaviors, modify existing methods for individual animals, and create new methods where none previously existed. This flexibility allows the tools of ...

What is clicker training?- dog training

What is clicker training? Clicker training is a way of training animals in which desirable behavior is marked with a sound maker and then reinforced, making the behavior more likely to happen in the future. Who can use clicker training? People of all ages! What animals can be clicker trained? All animals, young or old. All species and breeds, small or large. Clicker training creates strong reliable behaviors, and is a great way of modifying behavior- solving shyness, reactivity and aggression. It is also a ethical way to bond with your companion animal as you train the animal to want to do what you want them to do, rather than physically or psychologically intimidating the animal to do what you want. Stop puppies biting- clicker dog training

This video is on how to stop your puppy biting you. The technique of clicking the absence of biting was shown to me by my mentor Kyle Rayon, who is one of the most amazing and innovative trainers, though she is very modest! Dogs use their mouths to interact with their environment, so it is normal for a puppy to want to bite your hands or clothes. However in our society it is highly inappropriate. To train a puppy to stop using their mouth when interacting with humans is simple. All you have to do is set up training scenarios where your puppy would normally start biting and train an alternate response- calmly sitting, lying down, standing, or walking with a closed mouth. First you would start with the least arousing game- so simply just a reaching hand. As you reach, click or say "yes" and then feed a treat. As the puppy is successful you can progress to more and more arousing stimulus. You should not allow your dog to be man handled or petted roughly. Petting should not only be rewarding for the human but for the dog as well. However at some point in your dogs life, someone might get to your dog before you can stop them and be overly rough. You can prepare your dog for these situations by playing training games. But when these situations do occur in real life, respect your dog, and get them out of the stressful situation. Do practice handling exercises for grooming as well as vet visits regularly... Tips- These exercises should only be done by ADULTS. As children can ...

Handling Shyness- Clicker Dog Training

If you live in the San Diego Area and are interested in adopting Jamie or Beanie, contact: Loving Arms Animal Rescue and Adoption www.lovingpetadoptions.org These exercises are for all dogs, as most dogs do not like to be handled. This video is the first in a series to come... I am sorry about the big block of text at the beginning of the video, but it is because this exercise needs to be taken seriously, as if done wrong you can scare a dog, and a frightened dog will bite, as will any animal that is frightened. If you are worried that your dog is too shy or frightened to work with, you can talk to an animal behaviorist first. Another game you can do is just tossing the dog treats, and feeding the dog his meals by dropping the kibble for the dog following you.

Solving Counter Surfing- Clicker Dog Training

This is a video on how to train your dog not to surf the counters or in other words put their paws up and eat food and items that are on your counters. Remember to keep in mind that during training, items that your dog likes should NOT be left in reach on counters so that you don't UNDO all the training you have just been doing. As nagging a turkey off the counter WILL train your dog to do it again! At the beginning of the video you will see Tug my new puppy BEFORE I trained him, he would jump up and onto tables to lick them clean. At the end of the video you can see the results of one session that was a couple minutes long. Tips: 1- Make sure the dog NEVER gets the food- it sounds obvious but some dogs are very FAST! 2- If he is struggling to look away from the food, either give him a hint by making an attention noise or take some steps away so he is not as close to the food 3- As he succeeds raise criteria 4- You can start off first with a carrot on the table but the reinforcement is something even better like Chicken 5- Watch my 'leave it' video for more information on teaching the leave it Dog training clicker training manners teaching a dog to not touch food on counters counter surfing stealing food

Favorite this video so you can watch Step by Step Instructions over and over on how to shape, then back chain together all the behaviors needed to have a solid retrieve to hand for bird dogs and gun dogs. All positive. Tips for training given as you work through the process. Practice each step until your dog can do it correctly 8 out of 10 times in a row. When you add the next criteria, your dog should be successful 50% of the time. If she's not, you need to simplify something for her so she can be. You can use tugging to increase desire for the bumper between sessions if you use a different toy, not the bumper. This method works for natural retrieving breeds as well as non-natural retrievers such as Jessie. It allows you to retrain any part of the retrieve chain that your dog is not proficient with. Clicker training as a method vs using a clicker

My first video blog. Basically there needs to be a new term for 'the clicker training method' as people are getting the wrong idea about what 'Clicker Training' really is. Some people are under the impression that by just using a clicker, you are in fact 'clicker training'. I believe that 'clicker training' is a precise method that is being used 100% of the time, NOT just when the dog does something correct... listen and find out what I believe 'clicker training' is all about... ;)

Training high drive dogs- clicker dog training

The dogs featured in this video belong to my friend youtube user: alomaro There is a myth going around that is not founded in science, but is mere opinion, that high drive dogs need to be physically and psychologically intimidated in order to be trained. By using Progressive Reinforcement Training which involves no forms of physical or psychological intimidation, you can train high drive dogs the right level of arousal as well as reliable behaviors, and how to be friendly and calm around other dogs and people. To learn exactly what Progressive Reinforcement is go here: www.dogmantics.com The Need for a New Term: A type of animal training exists that involves no forms of intimidation, confrontation, violence, reprimands, or domination. This non-violent type of training has gone under many names: "Clicker Training," "Positive Training," "Positive Reinforcement Training," and "Reward Training," among others. There is a need for a more specific, more accurate, more inspirational term. The above terms have been used so loosely in recent years that they have lost their original meanings. How has this happened? Trainers who use compulsion methods may incorporate a clicker (a noise maker to mark desirable behavior) and refer to themselves as a "Clicker Trainers." Trainers who use painful or intimidating methods may include food or toy rewards in their training and refer to themselves as "Reward Trainers" or "Positive Reinforcement Trainers." Splash and Kiko were trained to turn the light switches on and off using Free Shaping. In this video I wanted to show that you can use Luring to achieve complex behaviors in a rapid amount of time. Tug already has the skills of fading a lure and adding a verbal cue under his belt. But I have to say that all this footage was taken from a single training session of 10 minutes long. When using free shaping getting to this same level with the two behaviors of "push" and "off"- it took a few more training sessions and I found it harder with dogs that liked to retrieve as they would keep offering trying to put the light switch in their mouth like a dumbell. Hope you have fun with this one! The key is to keep raising criteria quickly!!! DONT get trapped on the luring stage!!! The luring stage should only last a couple of minutes until your dog is reliably making sweeping movements to confidently turn the switch on and off. See you next time!

How To Clicker Train Your Dog To Enjoy Nail Clipping!

Many dogs dislike getting their nails trimmed. However, we can break down this task into smaller components and recondition a calm response to help the dog learn to tolerate (and even enjoy) this experience. Clicker training allows us to perfectly time and mark the moments that we need in order to build this behavior. Although I am using a clicker in this video, the same results can be achieved by using a consistent marker sound (like the word "yes") in place of the 'click'. Clicker training is very effective in modifying a variety of behaviors in dogs, including but not limited to - aggression.

How To Clicker Train "Heel" Position (Dog Training)

A couple of you have been asking how I teach heel, so here it is! The first thing I work on is getting the dog to find the heel position. They have to be VERY good at this first step if we want a reliable, tight and focused heel. A good technique to remove the 'chair' is to put it further away by an inch every day for a week. By the end of the week you will likely no longer need it. Teaching a dog to come around to your side also has a very useful application in loose leash walking. I will go over this in my next video, which will be up in 2 days!

This is a video tutorial on how to teach your puppy not to bite at his leash. Don't start the training games, AS the problems are occurring. Start the games when your puppy is calm and relaxed to set him up for success. If your puppy is very excitable, you could have your puppy on leash or in a pen while someone else does the distraction further away from you at first so that the puppy can cope. Teaching default calm behaviors like a 'settle' will increase your puppies abilities to cope with exciting situations and make the correct choices.

Clicker Dog Training: STOP Leash Pulling!

This is an exercise that supplements the techniques that I have presented on this topic already. It is not by any means a conclusive, end-all solution to stop leash-pulling. However, after having worked through everything else mentioned in my other videos on teaching loose leash walking, I find that a lot of dogs learn very quickly with this approach that they must not pull if they want to continue the walk. It is important to note however, that using food as a reward after every 'roundabout' may cause some dogs to pull just so they can come around for a reward. Using food rewards occasionally should eliminate this problem.
