Project Censored

visit coanews.org Project Censored is a national research effort launched in 1976 by Dr. Carl Jensen, professor emeritus of Communications Studies at Sonoma State University. Upon Jensen's retirement in 1996, leadership of the project was passed to associate professor of sociology and media research specialist, Dr. Peter Phillips. Under Phillips's guidance, Project Censored tracks the news published in independent journals and newsletters, and every year the group compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of social significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media. Veteran broadcaster Walter Cronkite said Project Censored "is one of the organization's we should listen to, to be assured that our newspapers and broadcasting outlets are practicing thorough and ethical journalism." Phillips says, "the restructuring of media in the United States is creating forms of censorship that are as potentially damaging as overt censorship." "Media corporations have been undergoing a massive merging process that is realigning our sources of information in America," Phillips wrote in a an op-ed recently. "Values such as freedom of information and belief in the responsibility of keeping the public informed are adjusted to reflect policies created by bottom-line oriented CEOs. Papua New Guinea: Land of the Unexpected

The country's rugged natural settings are home to a staggering array of wildlife, including more than 21000 species of higher plants, 200 species of mammals, and 700 species of birds. Papua New Guinea's indigenous clans are linguistically just as diverse; more than 800 languages are spoken within the nation's borders. These numerous clans also hold the key to conserving both their cultural and natural wealth of their country, specifically because they control approximately 90 percent of the nation's territory through a system of traditional land tenure. Because almost all of the land in Papua New Guinea is owned by its people, and not by the government, conservation efforts need to be approved and enforced by the local landowners. Crater Mountain is one of these landowner and NGO cooperative conservation initiatives in PNG.

Video from: bigpicture.tv More great indy news media at coanews.org Professor Howard explains how the original risk assessment of chemicals grossly underestimated chemical toxicity. As an example he talks about Bisphenol A, an endocrine disrupter, which leaches from every day products such as plastic feeding bottles. This adds to the risk of cancer. He talks about the limitations of modern toxicology and welcomes Europe's first chemical hazard assessment programme, known as REACH. He calls for an immediate precautionary reduction in the production of all chemicals.

Chemical Hygiene

Video from: bigpicture.tv More great indy news media at coanews.org The chemical industry is huge. Widely defined, it accounts for 7% of world GDP. Yet despite the ubiquity of potentially toxic man-made chemicals, consumer health protection is woefully inadequate. Professor Howard's work has revealed cancer-causing (or 'carcinogenic') effects of many manufactured chemical compounds, some of which pose particular risk to the unborn foetus. Until health and safety standards improve, Dr Howard advocates a chemical hygiene discipline, just as we have a biological hygiene discipline. With better knowledge and increased awareness of the dangers, certain steps can be -- and must be -- taken to reduce unnecessary exposure.

The Rise in Cancer -- Party 1

Video from: bigpicture.tv More great indy news media at coanews.org Within the last fifty years the incidence of cancer has grown to almost epidemic proportions. Nearly one in two American males contract some form of cancer. Professor Howard looks at the probable reasons behind this, pointing in particular to the rapid rise in chemical pollution. The use of chemicals by industry has grown exponentially since the Second World War (see clip 3, 'Chemical Hygiene'). As a result we are led to absorb into our bodies many thousands of chemicals each year. Some of these are endocrine disrupters which interfere with hormonal activity -- especially in fetuses.

IBM and the Holocaust

Produced by gnn.tv Get more great videos coanews.org Become a Myspace friend: myspace.com It has been over 50 years since Adolf Hitler took his life in a small underground bunker near Berlin. And while, for many, the Holocaust that he planned and executed against the Jewish population of Europe is a thing of the past -- a dark chapter of our history that serves a reminder of man's inhuman potential -- for others, it is a subject of unrelinquished sorrow and tireless investigation. It is in the latter camp that we find Edwin Black, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated international bestseller IBM and the Holocaust. The book, which documents IBM's direct links to Hilter and his so-called 'Final Solution' by providing the Third Reich with census machines and punch card technology, caused IBM to issue a formal statement claiming that the Nazis controlled the operations of IBM Germany during the war. But Edwin's research shows that Thomas J. Watson, founder and president of IBM during the company's financial relationship with the Nazis, exercised more hands-on control of the operation than they care to admit. In his Guerrilla News directorial debut, Paul Shore interviews the author and deploys GNN's trademark design aesthetic in what is sure to be one of the most controversial documentaries about US corporate complicity with the Nazi regime.
