Metal Detectors -- What are they good for? Hello and welcome to digging for metal. There are a lot of videos about metal detecting and treasure hunting. But, what is a metal detector good for? Now, to me it is a tool like a hammer or a screw-driver. Or... may be a computer. And -- it takes it's time to learn a tool. And if you want to master a tool, you have to practice, practice, and practice again. The first detectors I had were self-made. Some were really good, some were just junk. But even the junky ones detected metals. So what does a detector do? -- It will show the presence of metal, and sometimes other stuff like highly mineralized stones, also known as hot rocks. Some detectors can cancel out those hot rocks and bad soil. Some can reject unwanted metals. Metal detectors are sending and receiving one or more frequencies. They work like a radio for metals. And the more sophisticated the receiver is, the more info you can get from the radio station, in this case, from the target. The used frequency, which a metal detector is transmitting, is responsible for sensitivity, depth and target separation, in conjunction with the used coil size and type. As a rule of thumb for vlf detectors you can say, the higher the frequency, the more sensitive to small items and to lower conductive items like natural gold nuggets or small jewelry the machine will be. Lower frequencies will be good for high conductive like silver, and these lower frequencies will penetrate the ground ...
