Diana Damrau - COLORaturA

Diana Damrau - COLORaturA Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. It's impossible to know whether Diana Damrau was born great, but on the evidence of her latest Virgin Classics disc of Mozart concert and opera arias, she has — without question — achieved greatness; surely few contemporary lyric coloraturas could handle this program, which ranges from the sprightly to the sublime, with Damrau's firm technical command, unaffected mastery of characterization and beauty of tone ... More, please. Thus was the response of the magazine of New Yorks Metropolitan Opera Guild, Opera News, to German soprano Diana Damraus last Virgin Classics recital, Donna. In less effusive, though no less positive mode, the BBC Music Magazines critic stated that I cant remember when I last enjoyed a Mozart recital of this kind so much. Among the accolades for Damraus first Virgin Classics recital, Arie di bravura by Salieri, Mozart and Righini was the highly prestiigious Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. After two Virgin Classics recitals of 18th-century repertoire, this new collection moves forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, with repertoire ranging from Nicolai and Rossini to Stravinsky and Bernstein, from comedy to tragedy and covering four languages: German, Italian, French and English. It includes Zerbinettas marathon coloaratura aria from Ariadne auf Naxos, one of the operas which spearheaded Damraus international career Damraus status ...

coloratura Ellen Beach Yaw "Skylark" -highest voice recorded

Ellen Beach Yaw (9/14/1869--9/9/1947) was an American coloratura soprano, best known for her concert career. She had an extraordinary vocal range and could produce unusually high notes. Known as "Lark Ellen" or "The California Nightingale," she was reportedly the only known soprano of her era who could sing AND SUSTAIN the D above high D. She was also able to trill in major thirds or fifths! The Edison Diamond Disc---posted here--- of her vocal composition, "The Skylark," has always been a prized find for record collectors, as she does indeed trill on 3rds and 5ths...and the song ends with the highest note ever recorded during the acoustic-record days....prior to 1925. What makes this disc so "rare" is that it was in the Edison catalog for little more than a year. The master burned in the Edison fire of 1914 and was never redone. Secondly, the discs themselves have become unstable and break apart from their thick core, rendering them all but unplayable. The number of surviving good copies is dwindling. In spite of every precaution, my copy, which was "new" when I acquired it, continues to deteriorate. It's maddening! Yaw was born in the small town of Boston, near Buffalo, New York. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was very young. Her father died when she was yet a child. The family was poor. Yaw began singing and composing songs as a child. Her first vocal lessons were from her mother. Yaw sang in concerts, beginning as a child in the 1880s, to make money to pay ...

Ada SARI - Polish coloratura soprano; J.Strauss

"Her first appearance was a sensation, the greatest one during the present concert season ! Ada Sari at Milan's Scala ! If we could imagine all the praises that we have ever heard, such as - the sweetness of a beautiful soprano voice and a wonderful elegance and charm portrayed by the greatest coloraturas', from the young Prevosti, to Tetrazini and Gemma Bellinconi, and combine all the most notable qualities of each of them..., if we were to imagine the young Selma Kurz illuminated by all the shades of a blue sky; only then the image of Ada Sari could be clearly seen". Those words, written by a reviewer for the Münchener Zeitung after the artist's first performance in Munich in 1924 in the best way characterise the phenomenal uniqueness of Ada Sari. For thirty years, in virtually all the opera and concert halls throughout three continents her performances had evoked the public's enthusiasm. The critics called her "The Queen of coloratura" and "new Patti". Which in those times, was the greatest compliment that could have been paid to her. She was born in 1886 in Wadowice near Cracow. Her real name was Jadwiga Szayer. After completing vocal studies in Vienna and Milan under prof. Antonio Rupnick, she made her debut as Margarete in "Faustus" in Teatro Nazionale, Rome (1909). After this, she was invited to perform at Naples, Milan, Trieste, Venice, Florence, Madrid, Lisbone, Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Warsaw. Coloratura soprano ADELINA PATTI sings "The Laughing Song" from Auber's comic opera, "Manon." This exceedingly rare recording, privately made for Patti on a brown wax cylinder, was discovered in the 1940's and transferred to a acetate 78 rpm disc by Wm. Seltsam (1897-1968) of Bridgeport, Conn. Understand that THIS IS THE OLDEST EXISTING RECORDING of a world-class opera singer and one of the first operatic recordings by anyone! DO NOT EXPECT HIGH FIDELITY; this is ancient sound. Listen carefully as the announcer gives Patti's name and the selection. It is generally stated that Patti's first recordings were made in 1905. It was in this year that her first DISC records were made....but not her first recording! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Adelina Patti, the greatest soprano of her day, will always be associated with her castle in the Upper Swansea Valley. From then on, her international career was assured. As a bel canto coloratura soprano she had no rival. Giuseppe Verdi thought she was the greatest singer he had ever heard. Maria Aleida Rodriguez The Superb Coloratura Soprano Linda di Chamounix

Maria Aleida Rodriguez has an AMAZING INCREDIBLE voice. I have never seen someone singing this difficult area with so much grace than her. Her facility for the mega highs note is unbelievable. "Linda di Chamounix" contains an air for soprano without which no collection of opera arias is complete. This is Linda's aria in the first act, "O luce di quest' anima" (Oh! star that guid'st my fervent love). When Donizetti was composing "Linda di Chamounix" for Vienna, with this air and its fluent embellishments, he also was writing for the Imperial chapel a "Miserere" and an "Ave Maria" which were highly praised for a style as severe and restrained as "O luce di quest' anima" is light and graceful

Bela Rudenko sings Glière's Coloratura Concerto (1st mvt.)

Bela Rudenko (b.1933) Reinhold Glière: Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, Op.82 Glière's two movement coloratura concerto of 1943 is, perhaps, his most frequently performed composition in the genre (his other concertos are for harp, violin, cello, and french horn), though commercial recordings are still relatively infrequent. This should come as no surprise, since the piece makes substantial demands on the soloist. Vocal agility, steadiness of tone, and accuracy of attack are required here, as is superior breath support (particularly in the first movement, where the singer must form carefully arched phrases while negotiating the endless passages of lyrical, wordless melisma). Among the highly commendable versions on CD are recordings by Eileen Hulse and Joan Sutherland, who left us a fine performance with Richard Bonynge conducting the London Symphony. Another artist who successfully meets the abovementioned challenges is Ukrainian coloratura Bela Rudenko. A graduate of the Odessa Conservatory (1956), Rudenko was a leading soprano first at the Kiev Opera and then at the Bolshoi Theater, where she sang for 16 years (bowing there in 1972, in Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmila"). Her voice was slender rather than huge, but it was also bright, vivid, and crystalline in its clarity. It is not an infallible instrument- while her singing is quite precise, the attentive listener will notice some harsh, scrappy attacks, as well as a slightly metallic core (especially as she ...

coloratura Elvira De Hidalgo -Carneval Espanola- CALLAS tchr - GMMIX

De HIDALGO sings from El Principe Carneval: Cancion Espanola -- by José Serrano, 1873-1941, a Spanish composer of operas and zarzuela. Coloratura soprano Elvira De Hidalgo was born at Valderrobres, Aragona, in 1892 and died in Milan in 1980. As an accomplished pianist, she appeared before the public at age 12. She went on to study singing in Barcelona and then traveled to Milan for vocal study with Raoul Vidal. She made her singing debut in Naples, singing in Barbiere di Siviglia in 1908 when only sixteen years of age. With her incredible agility, silvery sound and vocal extension, she was considered one of the finest coloratura sopranos of her day. She sang in principal opera houses of Europe and at the Met in 1910-191l and again from 1924 to 1926. De Hidalgo was highly acclaimed in Sonnambula, Lucia di Lammermoor, La figlia del reggimento and in Verdi operas, especially Rigoletto. She retired from the stage in 1932 and thereafter devoted herself to teaching. It was when a professor at the Conservatory of Athens that she was the teacher of MARIA CALLAS, her most famous pupil. De Hidalgo had a profound influence on Callas, which explains Maria's early interest in the florid bel canto roles. Elvira De Hidalgo recorded for Fonotipia and Columbia. You are listening to a Columbia disc dating back over 90 years. ALL her original recordings are considered rare.

coloratura Marta Eggerth at age 90 - Kalman gmmix

Hungarian-born American singer-actress Marta Eggerth has maintained her performing career for over 70 years. Here we hear her sing "Que J'aime Paris." It almost defies belief, hearing her at 90, that she is, indeed, 90 years of age. Unlike most sopranos advanced in years, her upper register remains intact. Obviously, she's not afraid of the "high notes." She starred in over 40 films and recently performed a New York concert in 2007, aged 95. Born as Márta Eggerth on April 17, 1912 in Budapest, she began singing at age 11. Very popular in Europe, she and her husband (who both had Jewish mothers) were forced to flee Europe and settled in the United States. She appeared in MGM films but never achieved the fame she enjoyed in Europe. After her contract was not renewed, she and her husband, Polish actor-singer Jan Kiepura, moved to New York, where they reared two sons. She enjoyed a lengthy run opposite her now-deceased husband in The Merry Widow on Broadway. Eggerth is a whirlwind advocate for operetta, a lighter and more playful form of opera. "In opera, everybody dies. In operetta, everybody is flirtatious", says Eggerth of the art form that peaked in the 1940s but which has always been her signature calling card. A marvelous 2-CD set of Marta Eggerth's recordings, covering the period from 1932 to 2002, can be obtained from Patria Productions, Inc., PO Box 344, Littleton, NH 03561 This set was compiled by MARjan Kiepura, an impressivly talented pianist, who sometimes ...

coloratura soprano MARIA GALVANY - Fado Portuguez

MARIA GALVANY sings "Ouvi dizar" by Julio Neuparth--FADO PORTUGUEZ--Victor record 87061, recorded May 12, 1908. BRILLIANT singing & a BRILLIANT recording. Contrary to what you're thinking, some of you night recognize the latter part of this song, which is very beautiful and lively. This disc was never released in the US,which explains why it's generally UNKNOWN. In Dec. 2008, the composer's great- grandson, Antonio Neuparth Sottomayor, sent an email from Portugal that included a picture of Galvany and the 1903 program where the song was introduced to the public. FADO was written FOR Maria Galvany. Galvany made 22 "G & T Victor" recordings, most of which were not in US catalogs. Marisa Galvany (1878-1944), one of the most dazzling coloratura sopranos who every lived, was born in Granada and studied at Madrid Conservatory. She made her debut as Lucia at Cartagena in 1897. Specializing in coloratura roles, she sang with great success in Spain and Italy, gaining her greatest popularity in South America. She also toured with a company that performed throughout Europe, including Russia, where she was a favorite singer. In London in 1909, she appeared at Drury Lane as Amina, Rosina, and in the title role of Meyerbeer's Dinorah. In Lisbon she sang uninterruptedly for 15 years at the Coliseu. She gained great success in Parma, Venice, and Genoa. Galvany NEVER appeared at La Scala, the Met, the Teatro Cólon, or Covent Garden.
