This is an original tune I wrote from a melody that I came up with about 25 years ago. The original melody was intended to be much much slower, very forlorn and melancholy, but one of my guitarist friends from Berklee had once played it in an upbeat Bossa Nova style just to see how it would sound. I never did anything with it back then, but when I pulled it back out recently I decided to give the Bossa Nova idea another try. It's totally different than what I originally envisioned for the tune...but I also think it totally works. I decided to add a swing section for the solo choruses to make it even more interesting. This is just the first two choruses. I intend to add another swing solo chorus, then finish it out by switching back to bossa nova for the final melody chorus. I had to stop in the middle for now to prepare for a short trip out of town, but I thought I'd go ahead and post what I have in case I never get around to finishing it. By the way...what you hear in the first chorus is actually two alto saxophones playing in unison. I recorded the melody twice, then mixed it down into a single track.

I'm still trying to get comfortable with my new Cannonball saxophones. The soprano was no problem, but it's obviously going to take a while to get my alto chops back after 20 years of not playing alto. I had no idea I had lost so much muscle tone in my lower lip. It'll come. I just need to work on it for a few weeks. These Cannonballs are great horns though...every bit as good as any of the Selmer Mark-VI's I used to play.

A non-traditional version of a traditional Christmas song, I call this an "inside-out" arrangement. Instead of following the traditional jazz form of playing the melody on the first and last chorus with improvisation in the middle, I've done the opposite by using the improvised choruses as bookends. The original video for this was created by manulitodos (manuel). It was a wonderful solo performance with guitar and vocals only. Manuel was gracious enough to allow me to "attempt" to add a little saxophone to the mix. I can't say that I did a great job of making it sound like the saxophone was in the same room with Manuel because we're on opposite sides of the planet and we use different recording techniques, but I did the best I could under the circumstances. I hope the results are pleasing...especially to Manuel. Thanks for the opportunity of collaborating with you, Manuel. It's great that we can do things like this when there are so many miles between us.

Live performance at the 11th annual North Carolina Azalea Festival in March of 1958. The trio consists of my father and two of his friends. I was only eight months old at the time of this performance, but my first exposure to music as a young boy was listening my father and his friends practicing and rehearsing in our living room, which often included playing along to recordings of The Harmonicats and The Harmonica Rascals. Years later, during the 70's, my father joined The Harmonica Rascals and remained with them until shortly before he died in 1979.
