Coot ATV testing
First shakeout test of my amphibious articulated Coot ATV after I installed a new motor. Nothing strenuous here, mainly some putting around and a few dirt mounds and logs. After I work on a few issues I'll take it out on some more challenging terrain, including swimming it. This is a 1968 2-wheel-steer model. The fuel tank in the rear hull needs to be relocated, for one thing, and better engine cooling provided.

These interesting birds look like a duck, walk like a duck, and sort of quack like them too, but they are actually "Coots"; brown and black water birds with bright white bills. Enjoy the sights and sounds of a relaxing evening at the lake while sun is setting - the birds finish-up their day with some cleaning (preening) a few bites of under-water plants before dark.

Mt Coot-tha hillclimb
I'm guest driving Neil Roshier's (the Editor of RACE magazine) Rochdale Olympic kit-car at the Mt Coot-tha hillclimb event on the 30th-31st of May 2009. The car was pretty twitchy as the suspension was far from sorted and the brakes could have been better! It's also only one of two in Australia so I had to be pretty careful with it .... no dings!

Mount Coot-Tha circuit demonstrated on motorcycle
An easy-paced road, the circuit at Mt. Coot-Tha rarely gives a rider any chances to exceed 100km/h and will drop their speeds no lower than 40km/h (these speeds are depending on pace of course). Corners have consistent speeds between 65-80km/h, with a few exceptions like the halfway twisty and some of the long tight rights. The surface is a bit bumpy, but not hazardous. The main problems with the surface are water run-off and debris from rain and wind. Always do a survey lap as some corners are a little blind. Traffic is usually very thing. Other motorists fancy going significantly slower on the drive, but workers at the stations keep within the limit. There are plenty of safe opportunities to overtake given just a few moments of patience. Lastly, cyclists often use this road in afternoons. On the reverse circuit going downhill, some cyclists can travel at a very fast pace (60km/h +). It's sensible to only pass them on a decent straight as this part of the circuit in the reverse format is a lot more challenging on turns, braiking, and visibility.

Suzuki GS500 doing Mt Coot-Tha Circuit, Brisbane
Footage from on board a Suzuki GS500 K9 of the Mt Coot-Tha circuit which overlooks the city of Brisbane. After the midway round-a-bout you can see a glimpse of the city if you look carefully. With the wideangle lense it almost looks like another mountain in the distance and not the city. This is only ten minutes out of the CBD and a popular circuit and place on Friday and Saturday nights. It's also where all the city's TV Stations have their transmission towers - some of which can be seen during the run.

Coot Grant and Kid Wilson - Stevedore Man (1926)
Coot Grant was the main stage name of Leola B. Pettigrew, a classic blues singer and guitarist from Alabama whose legal name became Leola Wilson following her marraige to performing partner Wesley Wilson. The pair, who ironically were born in the same year, met and began performing together in 1905 and were wed seven years later. Pettigrew was already known as Coot Grant by this time, the name representing some kind of word play on the nickname "Cutie." She had been involved in show business since she was a child, beginning as a dancer in vaudeville. Prior to the beginning of the first World War she had already toured both Europe and South Africa, sometimes appearing under the name of Patsy Hunter. Her husband, who played both piano and organ, also performed under a variety of bizarre stage names including Catjuice Charlie, in a gross-out duo with Pigmeat Pete, as well as Kid Wilson, Jenkins, Socks and Sox Wilson. The husband and wife, billed as Grant And Wilson, Kid and Coot and Hunter And Jenkins, appeared and recorded with top jazz artists such as Fletcher Henderson, Mezz Mezzrow, Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong. They performed in musical comedies, vaudeville, travelling shows and revues and in 1933 appeared in the film Emperor Jones with the famous singer Paul Robeson. While filming a movie I came across a mother duck defending her ducklings against a Coot. A Great Crested Grebe can also be seen swimming past at one point. Filmed on the Canon FS200, keep in mind that I rendered this video at 1.25mb so the quality is a little degraded. This is the Jubilee river at Eton going towards Windsor. This was edited on OpenShot for Linux, using Inkscape for the Titles. Voice was recorded on Gnome Sound Recorder for Linux Ubuntu.

Duck Stop - 07 - The Coot and the Trap
For many species the breeding season is over and they are moulting rendering them unable to fly. Thats good news for Anja, because she needs blood and feather samples from the coots to perform an isotope analysis. Together, the researchers drive the birds in the direction of the strategically placed duck traps. They also need to examine the isotopic signature of the food they suspect to be the coots principal food, low-light algae and zebra mussels. They are considerably easier to catch in comparison to the coots.

Me Rollerblading Down Mt Coot-tha
This is the video I took of me rollerblading down Mt Coot-tha on Monday, March 31st 2008. My best friend Joab and I rollerbladed down Castle Hill in Townsville in October of 2003, but we didnt get to record it, and it was so awesome, for the last few months I've been thinking about doing something similar. After lots of thought and consideration I decided to go down Mt Coot-tha. I taped the camera to my right foot, and its on there tightly, so all that movement is my whole foot buming and moving around. I had to slow down a few times so I dragged my right foot behind me, so thats why the camera looks to the right a few times. I also had to pick up speed a couple of times so when it looks like im falling over and over, thats just me pushing off with my feet. And yes I do move to the right hadn side of the road half way down. That was to avoid a T-section at the end and possibly going over the guard rail. I stayed as far left as I could to avoid traffic but had to move to the right before the last right hand turn so I didnt run into any cars making a left at that corner. I nearly lose my balance coming around that last corner. On my shadow you may see my arms flair out in an attempt to keep my balance. And then the redish Audi after the silver Holden comes within a metre of me. This is one of the scariest things I've done. I dont recommend it to anyone. It wasnt as smooth sailing as I suspected. It was very bumpy and there were 2 or 3 occasions on the way down that I <b>...</b>
