Australian stunt Motocrosser Robbie Maddison not only jumped over the 85-metre wide Corinth Canal at height of nearly 100 metres in Greece on Thursday, but he also had a bigger hurdle to overcome: fear. Motocross Freestyle, with breathtaking tricks such as flips performed at heights of up to three storeys high, is one the worlds most dangerous sports. Robbie Maddison is one of the worlds best in FMX. But that is not enough for the 28-year-old Australian. Maddison is always looking for even greater thrills and has completed a number of spectacular jumps that would have made pioneering stuntman Evel Knievel proud. In 2007 and 2008 Maddison set three world records for distance all the way to 107 metres (350 feet). In 2009 he celebrated New Years Eve in Las Vegas by jumping up 30 metres onto the Arc de Triomph in front of Paris Las Vegas and then descended off the monument to ground level. Last year pictures of him jumping the Tower Bridge over the Thames River with a backflip while the drawbridge was open went around the world. Many Motocrossers have wanted to jump across the Corinth Canal, which built in 1893. But the Australian was the first to succeed. He speed his Honda 500 (2 Stroke) up through a turn-filled approach past a pool, across a soccer pitch and past a chicken coop to a speed of 125 km/h. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland and therefore effectively makes the former an island. The canal is 6.3 kilometres in length and was built between 1881 and 1893.

On the afternoon of 24 May 2007 I was a passenger on the 10000-ton Seabourn Spirit when that vessel made a transit of the 3.9-mile (6.3-km)-long Corinth Canal from west to east. The 68.9-foot-wide (21-meter-wide) canal, constructed between 1881 and 1893, connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean Sea's Saronic Gulf. Cutting through the Isthmus of Corinth, the canal separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland. In effect, the Corinth Canal creates an island out of the Peloponnesus. Although ships narrow enough to utilize the canal can shave 400 kilometers off their journey, most of the 11000 annual canal transits are now made for touristic purposes. This town was turned into a large studio backlot for the filming of the Tim Burton classic; "Beetlejuice." Located in Orange County, East Corinth is a mere shadow of its on-screen alter-ego. Today, the town is indifferent from a typical small New England town. The real "Beetlejuice" house was nothing more than a three-sided facade built on a hill, and "Maintland's Hardware" was ACTUALLY the town's general store (now vacant as of 3/13/2010). The red covered bridge was built for the movie overtop the existing wooden bridge, and the road it is located on does not actually lead to where the house was located. Short clips from the actual movie are used in this video, but were used under "fair use" copyright laws. If I am wrong in doing this, please let me know before sending lawyers after me; I'll be glad to remove them from this video.

The Corinthian column structure was especially favoured during the Hellenist Era after Alexander the Great. Corinth's wealth came from arts, trade, commerce, shipping and science. Ancient Greeks used to say 'not everyone can afford to live in Corinth'. Corinth also had many colonies, such as Syracuse in Sicily, Apollonia, Epidamnus and Ambracia in Epirus. Corinth's troubles with some of its colonies led to the Peloponnesian war. Corinth was the city that Philip II of Macedon chose to make the Hellenic League, to plan the invasion of Persia. Corinth destroyed by the Romans, later rebuilt and it became the capital city of the Achaean province of the Roman Empire. Between the Greek mainland and Peloponnesus peninsula are the extensive ruins of ancient Corinth. Of the city's former magnificence, only a few Doric columns of the 6th century Temple of Apollo have survived. Due to its favorable location and fertile soil, 3000 years ago during the Neolithic period, the first settlements were established in this region. 146 BC marked the end of Classical Corinth. The Romans devastated and plundered the ancient metropolis and enslaved its people and for almost a hundred years, the ruins were uninhabited but, due to Caesar, new life returned to the city. Surrounded by the pure, wild beauty of nature, the ruins blend harmoniously into the magnificence of the surrounding landscape. From a medieval fortress, in the distance there are the remains of an ancient Corinthian port and even today, shipping plays an important role in the everyday life of this ancient city.

A Corinthian Pyxis, Part 1 (Ancient Art Podcast 5)

In episode 5 of the Ancient Art Podcast, we take a look at some Archaic Greek vase painting in a pyxis from the Orientalizing Period at the Art Institute of Chicago. We explore the Ancient Near Eastern influence on developing Greek civilization along with Greece's own interest in their own mythic, heroic past. We also discuss the strategic importance of Corinth in the cultural and commercial climate of the Orientalizing Period, while comparing the newly emerging, but short-lived Corinthian ware of this day and age to the traditional Geometric Period ware of earlier centuries and contemporary neighbors. We check out the emergence of Classical Doric Greek temple architecture in the Temple of Artemis at Corfu and see how its sculptural decor relates to the cultural milieu of Archaic Greece and the arts of the Orientalizing Period. The Art Institute Orientalizing Period pyxis further demonstrates a quintessential synthesis of imported Near Eastern mythology, symbolism, and iconography with the Greece's newfound passion for the iconography and symbolism of their own native, ancient, Bronze Age Mycenaean heroic and mythic ancestry. Date, Occasion, and Place of Origin It may be helpful here to rehearse the contacts and correspondence between Paul and the Corinthians in toto. (1) Paul arrived in Corinth in the spring of 50 CE and stayed there one and one-half years (Acts 18:11). (2) In the fall of 51 CE he sailed for Ephesus with Priscilla and Aquila. Priscilla and Aquila stayed in Ephesus while Paul returned to Antioch (Acts 18:18-22). While in Ephesus, Aquila and Priscilla met and trained Apollos, sending him back to Corinth to minister in Paul's absence (Acts 18:24--19:1). (3) A year later, in the summer/fall of 52 CE, Paul returned to Ephesus (after passing through the Phrygian-Galatian region) on his third missionary journey, and ministered there almost three years (Acts 20:31). Probably in the first year of his ministry in Ephesus, Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthians—a letter which is now lost (cf. 1 Cor 5:9). (4) When Paul learned of other problems from Chloe (1 Cor 1:11) and the delegation of Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus (1 Cor 16:17), he wrote 1 Corinthians. This was probably in the second year of his ministry at Ephesus, in the spring of 54 CE (for reasons which will become evident below). (5) He then visited the Corinthians in the summer/fall of 54, as he had indicated he would (1 Cor 16:6), but he was not able to spend the winter with them. Most likely, he was forewarned from Timothy that the Corinthians had not fully appreciated even his second letter (cf. 1 Cor 16:10). Hence <b>...</b>
