The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

Rare archive tv and film footage of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 - a rare occasion when Parry's anthem 'I was glad' includes the chant of 'vivat regina'. NOTE: this clip starts in black and white and moves into colour.

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1953 (Part 1/7)

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (Part 1) Date: June 2, 1953 In Westminster Abbey, where English kings and queens have been crowned for 900 years, Elizabeth triumphantly receives her crown on June 2, 1953. Indeed, there were more than 200 microphones in the Abbey and along the procession routes, with 750 commentators broadcasting in 39 languages. The Archbishop of Canterbury administers the Oath, and presents "Queen Elizabeth, your undoubted Queen," meaning by hereditary right. The people respond with shouts of "God Save Queen Elizabeth." Elizabeth solemnly promised and swore "to govern the People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon." The procession of the royal coach through Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace is a spectacle unlike any England has ever seen.

An excellent example of kitchen sink drama from the second year of "Coronation Street". Ena and Elsie have a face off over a poison pen letter. Absolute classic stuff.

Zadok the Priest:The Coronation Anthem

One of the last official acts of the reign of George I of Great Britain was to both naturalize George Frideric Handel as a British citizen and to commission Handel to write the coronation anthem for King George's son and successor, George II. As 1727 drew to a close, Britain had been enduring a generation's worth of political and religious turmoil. The union of Scotland and England was still tenuous at best, with many Scots and English Catholics (Jacobites by name) still supporting the line of the deposed King James II. When George I (of the House of Hanover) assumed the throne in 1714, he was hardly popular -- he spoke German and not English -- many Jacobites rose against him and joined James in rebellion. The rebellion was put down, but anti-Hanoverian sentiments still ran strong. George I looked to the Old Testament for a parallel to his situation, and found one in 1 Kings. The Bible told how King David of Israel, while nearing death was facing his own succession crisis. After some deliberation, he chose his son Solomon as his heir, rather than Solomon's ambitious half-brother Adonijah. In a grand ceremony, David's most trusted advisors, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, annointed Solomon as king. George feared another Jacobite uprising (which nonetheless came in 1745), and wanted to use the spectacle of his son's coronation to establish George II as the legitimate ruler in the public's eye. Thus Handel was called upon to write an appropriately-grandiose set of ...

Mozart - Concerto No. 26 "Coronation" mvt 1, part 1

Homero Francesch (Piano) Gerd Albrecht conducts the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie go here to view (and download!) this movement in it's entirety: www.divshare.com recorded at the Christian-Zais-Saal, Wiesbaden, December 2, 1990 Produced by Bernd Hellthaler and directed by János Darvas Concerto for Piano no 26 in D major, K 537 "Coronation" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart HC Robbins Landon writes: K.537 did not achieve the success he had hoped. K.537 is in many ways a parallel to the 'popular' Haydn symphonies of the late 1770s and early 1780s: neither Haydn nor Mozart is at his best when trying to be deliberately successful. The superficialities of K.537 did much to convince the nineteenth century of Mozart's supposed shallowness, his courtly 'lackey' style, just as the enormously popular Haydn Symphonies [53,63, 76-81 and cello concerto] established the romantic conception of Haydn as a playful old fool. In K.537 everything glitters, everything shines; the heartbreaking realization that his public did not understand and appreciate the concertos of 1782-6 seem t have induced Mozart to purge the new work of any restless, disturbing elements. The slow movement begins with all the innocent beauty of those in K.466 and 491: but, unlike the earlier slow movements, there is not real contast, and the middle section is too close to the spirit of the first.

The Great Coronation of Delhi Durbar 1911

Held in December to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India. Practically every ruling prince, nobleman, landed gentry and other persons of note in India attended to pay obeisance to their sovereigns. The Sovereigns appeared in their Coronation robes, the King-Emperor wearing the Imperial Crown of India with eight arches, containing six thousand one hundred and seventy exquisitely cut diamonds, and covered with sapphires, emeralds and rubies, with a velvet and miniver cap all weighing 34.05 ounces (965 g). They then appeared at a darshan (a sight) at the jharoka (balcony window) of Red Fort, to receive half a million or more of the common people who had come to greet them.A feature film of the coronation titled With Our King and Queen Through India (1912) -- also known as The Durbar in Delhi -- was filmed in the early color process Kinemacolor and released on 2 February 1912. A Delhi Herald of Arms Extraordinary and an Assistant Herald were appointed for the 1911 Durbar (Brigadier-General William Peyton and Captain the Hon. Malik Mohammed Umar Hayat Khan), but their duties were more ceremonial than heraldic. There is a magnificent tiara belonging to the present Queen called the Delhi Durbar Tiara. The necklace was presented to Queen Mary by the Maharanee of Patiala on behalf of the Ladies of India to mark the first visit to India by a British Queen-Empress. At the Queen's suggestion, it was designed to match her other ...

The Coronation of Tipu Sultan (1782)

Tipu Sultan becomes ruler of Mysore, India. coronation ceremony. Second Mysore War Tippu Sultan led a large body of troops in the Second Mysore War, in February 1782, and defeated Braithwaite on the banks of the Kollidam. Although the British were defeated this time, Tippu Sultan realized that the British were a new kind of threat in India. Upon becoming the Sultan after his father's death later that year, he worked to check the advances of the British by making alliances with the Marathas and the Mughals. Tippu Sultan had defeated Colonel Braithwaite at Annagudi near Tanjore on 18 February 1782. The British army, consisting of 100 Europeans, 300 cavalry, 1400 sepoys and 10 field pieces, was the standard size of the colonial armies. Tippu Sultan had seized all the guns and taken the entire detachment prisoners. In December 1781 Tippu Sultan had successfully seized Chittur from the British. Tippu Sultan had thus gained sufficient military experience by the time Haidar Ali died in December 1782. Source: Wikipedia
