"Occupy Wall Street" Protest in NYC Turns Violent: Police in New York have reportedly made dozens of arrests and have been using pepper spray as they try to stop anti-Wall Street activists from storming barricades blocking them off from the Stock Exchange. The demonstrations had been peaceful but turned violent as the night went on. Police have reportedly deployed orange netting to contain protesters. Meanwhile, in downtown Seattle police have arrested around 20 demonstrators who refused to remove their tents from Westlake Park, the Associated Press reports. Americans Awaken against corruption, inequality & corporate greed-News Analysis-10-14-2011

Protests against corporate greed, corruption and inequality continue across the US. On Friday, police clashed with protesters in New York and made several arrests. The popular, grassroots movement has sparked solidarity protests in more than 1400 cities with plans for global rallies in 71 countries. The growing popularity comes despite a campaign by some wealthy and influential lawmakers, including Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House, who labeled the protester as "mobs". In this edition of the news analysis, we will examine whether these protests can be ignored anymore, will the US government listen to their demands and what could be their impact on the US domestic and foreign policies, if any, as the country gradually prepares for an election year.

Occupy Brainerd demonstrators protest corporate greed, lack of jobs - Brainerd Dispatch MN

It wasn't an occupation, but Wednesday's message from demonstrators in front of Brainerd City Hall was clear to corporations and politicians alike — stop the greed and create jobs. For an hour and-a-half the crowd of more than 50 people, from teenagers to seniors, stood in the rain along the sidewalk outside city hall and held aloft placards and signs with slogans such as "We are the 99 % who are not millionaires", "Union strong", "Create jobs now", "No is not a solution", "Don't destroy the American dream" and "Economic Justice". The demonstration, one of many happening this week across the country, was a show of unity for the Occupy Wall Street movement. Every few seconds, passing motorists on Laurel or South Fifth streets would honk their horns or give a thumbs up, eliciting cheers from some of the demonstrators. Josh Brewster of Brainerd was holding a sign that read "Tax the richest 2 percent." He said he attended the demonstration because he wants a future for his children. Nothing, not even a little rain, was going to keep him away Wednesday, he said.

Reigning in Corporate Greed - Pt. 1

Thanks to an almost complete lack of regulation, the executives on Wall Street were able to gamble our economy for their own personal gain, ignoring ethics and in some cases the rule of law along the way. And while Congress is still trying to figure out whether or not to take action, the labor movement in America has decided to take matters into their own hands. Mike Papantonio of Air America's Ring of Fire talks with Richard Trumka, the secretary treasurer of the AFL-CIO, who has some big ideas on how to reign in the corruption and greed that has become too commonplace among Wall Street insiders.

'Occupy's simple message is key to its success - ''End Corporate Greed" - 'Occupy Wall Street'

From: 'Occupy's simple message is key to its success' Published: 04 November, 2011, 08:22 Occupy protesters demonstrate resilience to crackdowns and cynicism in the media but it is still unclear what lies ahead for the movement.Abby Martin, founder of Mediaroots.org, says that Occupy can become a real political force. While camping out and singing songs is one thing, getting the right politicians elected quite another. Martin says that the movement is unified and people are waking up to the two-party dictatorship, and realizing that the political system does not represent them anymore. "A lot of people tried to paint this movement as not unified and we do not have a cohesive message, but as far as I can see we have one message and it is corporate greed and we are not standing for it anymore," she declared. "No matter what your sign says, it all stems from the same source and that is corporate greed running amok." Martin believes it was a huge success for the movement when up to 20000 people peacefully marched and successfully shut down the Port of Oakland. She says that getting their point across justifies shutting down America's fifth largest port. "It was almost necessary to get the point across, no-one is really listening to us. Mainstream media is trying to marginalize this movement. So maybe it will take something like that to really get people to recognize our force," she said. The mainstream media in US accuses the Occupy movement of being envious of the rich ...

Wall Street Zombie Protesters - 2011

Protesters speaking out against corporate greed and other issues showed no signs of giving up their campaign Monday, with organizers urging participants to dress up as what they called corporate zombies and to take part in a rally against police brutality. The arrests of 700 people on the Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend fueled the anger of the protesters camping in a Manhattan park and sparked support elsewhere in the country as the campaign entered its third week. Occupy Wall Street started with fewer than a dozen college students spending days and nights in Zuccotti Park, near the city's financial center. But a day after Saturday's mass arrests, hundreds of protesters were resolute and like-minded groups in other cities had joined in. Group spokesman Patrick Bruner urged protesters to dress up as zombies and eat Monopoly money to let financial workers "see us reflecting the metaphor of their actions." As the encampment slowly began waking up Monday morning, several dozen police officers stood in formation across the street. One camper set up a table with tubes of makeup and stacks of fake money and applied white makeup to the face of a young woman. John Hildebrand, 24, an unemployed teacher from Norman, Okla., sat up in his sleeping bag around 10 am He said he arrived Saturday after getting a cheap plane ticket to New York. "My issue is corporate influence in politics," he said. "I would like to eliminate corporate financing from politics." One supporter, William Stack ...

More than 700 protesters demonstrating against corporate greed, global warming and social inequality, among other grievances, were arrested Saturday after they swarmed the Brooklyn Bridge and shut down a lane of traffic for several hours in a tense confrontation with police. They sleep on air mattresses, use Mac laptops and play drums. They go to the bathroom at the local McDonald's. A few times a day, they march down to Wall Street, yelling, "This is what democracy looks like!" It all has the feel of a classic street protest with one exception: It's unclear exactly what the demonstrators want.A real estate firm that owns Zuccotti Park, the private plaza off Broadway occupied by the protesters, has expressed concerns about conditions there, saying in a statement that it hopes to work with the city to restore the park "to its intended purpose." But it's not clear whether legal action will be taken, and police say there are no plans to try to remove anyone. "We see it as our job to make certain that people can demonstrate peacefully," Kelly said. Mostly, the protests have been peaceful, and the movement has shown no signs of losing steam. Celebrities like Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon even made recent stops downtown to encourage the group. Seasoned activists said the ad-hoc protest could prove to be a training ground for future organizers of larger and more cohesive demonstrations, or motivate those on the sidelines to speak out against injustices.
