Everyone's talking Corporate Social Responsibility.

..but what does it mean? Business sell themselves on CSR and their behaviours in their communities. A chap who knows all about it, Michael Hastings, tells us how we can use it to engage with employers when in a job interview, and how to spot a company that is truly walking the walk, not just talking the talk.

SCOTUS Shirks Corporate Responsibility

We'll take another look at the Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Supreme Court case. The question the Supreme Court would have to answer was whether or not, corporations, whom they deemed had the same rights as persons to flood money into elections, could also be held liable as persons would, in human rights abuses. Last week they ordered a re-argument of the case based on whether or not international cases such as this have a place in US courts. Earth Rights International's Katie Redford discusses. Judging Green Living's "Excellence in Corporate Responsibility" Awards

Visit 3blmedia.com for the latest sustainability and CSR headlines. Interview with Heather Lang, North American Research Director for Sustainalytics. Part 3. Transcript: That was another really interesting opportunity to be involved in the process of reviewing the submissions from a number of really amazing environmental forerunners and looking at three levels of engagement and looking at a senior executive who has done some really groundbreaking activities within their company to push forward the environmental agenda, also looking at a staff member who has done the same within a company, and then looking at a team to see a team that's really rallied and taken the environmental performance of the company forward in a really meaningful way. And I think it opened my eyes to what so many different companies are doing both large and small, companies here in Canada are doing to green their operations. We looked at the performance so are there clear metrics to show that the company has been successful with these initiatives and then also to look at the process. And that was an interesting bucket to see to the extent to which it engaged within its own corporate culture and also to see how it engaged within its broader corporate community such as its industry peers to reach out and share best practices. So those are the three different buckets that we looked at across a range of different industries and different size companies from very small local businesses to large Canadian ...

Speech Joseph Stiglitz at the Public Eye Awards 2012

Summary of Remarks by Joesph E. Stiglitz, keynote speaker at the 2012 Public Eye Awards We live in a closely integrated world, where what one person, one firm, one country does affects others—sometimes for the better, often for the worse. In the age of globalization, social phenomena and business endeavors of any significant scale are never just local in scope. There is no longer any credibility—if there ever was—to the interpretation of Adam Smith's ideas that suggests firms' pursuit of self-interest leads, as if by an invisible hand, to the well-being of society. Not even Adam Smith really believed that, but certainly no one today should. Banks' unbridled greed led the global economy to the brink of ruin. Unchecked exploitation of natural resources and the burning of fossil fuels have pushed our planet to the brink of environmental catastrophe. To protect our planet, to protect our society, we rely on two things. On one side, we need government regulations to prevent abuses. But we also need more—individuals and corporations must broaden their understanding of self-interest. The earth's most privileged individuals and societies will not remain forever insulated from consequences. It is in everyone's interest—even the richest 1%—that our planet thrive, that the divide between the haves and the have-nots not be too excessive. For firms, this entails corporate responsibility, going beyond the minimum required by the law to protect the environment, to treat workers with ...

IBM Study: Corporate Social Responsibility

Placing an added emphasis on corporate social responsibility and ensuring it is at the core of a business' strategy can yield financial benefits, according to a study from IBM. The survey, "Attaining Sustainable Growth Through Corporate Social Responsibility," indicates many companies now view CSR as a growth opportunity and not just a regulatory compliance. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed say they are using CSR activities to help generate revenue. In addition, many companies also view these types of initiatives as a way to gain a competitive advantage and access new business opportunities. Increased awareness by consumers on issues from climate change to product safety is, in part, driving corporate concern for these issues, according to the survey. In turn, the increased visibility of corporate behavior is influencing consumers' decisions on what to buy and who to buy from, who to work for, who to partner with and where to invest. The survey is based on responses from top executives at more than 250 companies worldwide.

Toren: Chinese Corporate Spying Case is the "Tip of the Iceberg"

March 19 (Bloomberg Law) -- Peter Toren, partner at Weisbrod Matteis & Copely PLLC, talks with Bloomberg Law's Lee Pacchia about trade secrets theft by foreign agents and a recent claim by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that the Chinese government had a role in a specific instance of corporate espionage involving an American company. Toren claims that trade secrets theft pose a prevalent and substantial risk to corporate America and that the responsibility for guarding against such threats lies both with the US government and the private sector.
