Google Tech Talks March 27, 3009 ABSTRACT Presented by Tom M. Mitchell E. Fredkin Professor and Department Head Machine Learning Department Carnegie Mellon University How does the human brain represent meanings of words and pictures in terms of the underlying neural activity? This talk will present our research using machine learning methods together with fMRI brain imaging to study this question. One line of our research has involved training classifiers that identify which word a person is thinking about, based on their neural activity observed using fMRI. A more recent line involves developing a computational model that predicts the neural activity associated with arbitrary English words, including words for which we do not yet have brain image data. This computational model is trained using a combination of fMRI data associated with several dozen concrete nouns, together with statistics gathered from a trillion-word text corpus. Once trained, the model predicts fMRI activation for any other concrete noun appearing in the text corpus, with highly significant accuracies over the 60 nouns for which we currently have fMRI data. The Corpus Clock has been invented and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building. It will be unveiled on 19 September by Prof Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time. The £1 million timepiece, known as The Corpus Clock, has been commissioned and designed to honour the John Harrison, who was famously the pioneer of Longitude and inventor of the esoteric clock mechanism known as a grasshopper escapement. The clock has been designed by the inventor and horologist Dr John Taylor and makes ingenious use of the grasshopper escapement, moving it from the inside of the clock to the outside and refashioning it as a Chronophage, or time-eater, which literally devours time. Dr. Jonas Temple, geologists, and his assistant Laurie have been examining some unusual rocks which seem unlike any they have studied. Later, when Temple is alone, the rocks assume the forms of black, living, pulsating creatures that slither across the cabinet and forcefully enter Temple's body as he struggles for his life. They are creatures from another palner who wish to take over Earth by using human bodies as their hosts. J'Dan is interrogated, where it is revealed that he is indeed a Romulan collaborator, yet he remains adamant that he was not involved in the dilithium chamber explosion. Satie and Picard agree that J'Dan could not have acted alone, and that a larger conspiracy is present. They establish an agreement of mutual cooperation.
