What to Bring to the Loading Table It's almost time! Bring with you to the loading table your long guns and ammo. Know how many rifle rounds are shot on that stage, it may vary. In Cowboy Action Shooting you will almost always load 5 rounds in each pistol. A leather (or wood block) loading strip can really go a long way to help you keep track of how many rounds you are bringing to the stage. Loading strips usually hold 20 rounds (4 sections of 5, or 2 sections of 10). This makes it easy to count out 10 rounds for your pistols. The remaining 10 holes in your loading strip will be sufficient to hold the 9 or 10 rifle rounds usually required for most stages. Make sure also that you have enough shotgun rounds in your belt to shoot the entire stage, and have extra in case you fumble and drop some, or for making up any misses. The Bridgeport Rig is a quick draw or fast draw pistol holder favored by lawmen and outlaws in the late 1800s. Today, the device enjoys cult status among cowboy action shooters and other antique gun enthusiasts. Flatau envisioned mounting the item on a belt or a saddle. He may have targeted military contracts with this dual-purpose concept; in fact, he approached the army within a few months of receiving his patent. The US Army tried 500 Flautau "pistol holders" among infantry and cavalry units in the Southwest during 1883. These were fabricated by the Bridgeport Gun Implement Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Army found Bridgeport Rigs unsuitable because the revolver wasn't protected from moisture and dirt. Some of the rejected army rigs no doubt entered the civilian market as surplus in later years (they may, in fact, have constituted the only commercial supply).
