Rope Pump in Gambia, wooden cranck, big wheel from truck tire
This movie was made around 1998 in the garden of Siddy, friend of Ann. The pump was to fill a cemented basin constucted on a raised platform of dirt. The well was only about 6 meter deep. The use was for a nursery of flower and garden plants. Special of the construction of the rope pump was the crank made this way for the first time from wood connected with sheet metal. This method is called "Welding Wood" and is described at www.demotech.org The rubber wheel was made out of the sides of a truck tire. Local workers found it very hard to cut them out. They wasted many metal saws on it and asked for more money to complete the job. I regarded this very reasoable and decided to abandon the idea of using truck tires for getting larger diameter wheels.
