This experimental opposed design using Briggs & Stratton engines, is what is called an opposed engine, since there is 2 pistons with a crankshaft at each end. The crankshafts are chained together to keep them synchronized with each other. I varied from the true opposed design by staggering the cylinders so that their centerlines don't line up now. This allowed me to create more of an over-head valve design, out of 2 Flatheads. I am working on a true opposed type 2 cycle, supercharged engine,based on the Junkers Jumo 205, but it is a long ways away yet. Some of the unusual noise is the flywheels rubbing on the cooling shroud, it just wants to rub for some reason :( With about 9:1 compression, this is a beast to start, as a second person is required to hold it down. It runs well, and usually starts on the first pull. The throttle is set about 40% open, as the 1 carburator is fussy about feeding twice the engine it was designed for, so I throttle it with my hand on the vid. The whole set-up weighs in at about 50lb, it is an awkward beast to lift around due to its shape and size.

My miata developed a serious crankshaft condition. I hope it can be repaired without replacing the crank. :(( Update: As dgl1962 noticed the crank itself is not wobbling, but the pulley is. I can tell you, from my web research, that a worn woodruff key is the probable cause. I was planning to replace the pulley, woodruff key and the crank bolt and not required to fix the condition, but as a precaution, also change the belts and the water pump. I was selling the car at the time and a buyer came just as I was about to order the parts. He insisted to have it fixed by himself, so I sold it before I could fix it. I've later heard from him that he did indeed fix it, but couldn't tell me any details. He just said that the whole "front" had been replaced. If your beloved miata has developed a similar condition, head over to miata.net to the garage section, they've got a great article about pulleys and additionally search for "Loctite Crank Fix". It involves replacing the part's I've mentioned and using loctite to glue the whole thing together as a safety precaution. This video explains how to install the 51mm crank from Honda Trail Bikes. This will take an 88 motor to 108 and a 95 motor to 117(54mm bores require case boring). This video shows the results of project I did at my study Automotive Engineering at the Rotterdam University of Applied Science. Goal was to get more experienced in CAD drawing with Autodesk Inventor by drawing and animating an automotive system. Many things could be chosen such as: suspension systems, steering systems, transmission systems etc. I chose to draw the lower end of an Harley-Davidson engine together with the pistons. I animated the assembly at the end so that it becomes very clear what happens in such an engine when it revs. I first measured the rough dimensions of real Harley-Davidson Shovelhead flywheels, connecting rods, pistons etc., after which I started drawing in CAD. Because it was my first time drawing with 3D CAD software, there is not much detail in the parts. It took me about a complete week (40 hours or so) to finish this assembly
