Another nominee for the coveted Golden Crocoduck braves the waters of science with the leaky boat of creationist ignorance. Note 1: In the video I show the Earth as it is today, and the location of the fossil Troodon and Oviraptor eggs in Montana and Mongolia. I described these as "opposite sides of the world." As a couple of viewers pointed out, the configuration of the continents was different in the cretaceous. However, the places where the different eggs were found are still what could be described as "opposite sides of the world." According to my "Atlas of Evolution", only a few degrees off 180 degrees, in fact. I wanted to use a globe representing the cretaceous, but couldn't find one. "Oops" ~Creationists We tried to tell them, but they just didn't listen. I probably should have pointed out that the Kepler telescope uses the transit method to find planets, which means it can't see the planet until it is "eclipsing" its star. In order for that to happen, it has to be at the perfect angle between us and its star. This means that Kepler is only capable of seeing a TINY fraction of the planets that are near us. That, too, greatly adds to the numbers of planets we can safely assume are out there. Ouch, Creationists...ouch. Kepler science chief William Borucki at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington DC estimates that there are at least 50 billion planets in our galaxy with around 500 million residing in habitable zones. The data was extrapolated from Kepler's findings. I also drew a similar conclusion from the data, thus considered my video cautious and conservative. That's why I comfortably posted the video without fear of it turning into an exaggerated arsenic lifeform story, or a "missing link" story. Now and again I get a comment saying that my use of the occasional tactical insult or profanity are detracting from the message of my videos and that I should take the high ground when dealing with the festering pustules otherwise known as creationists. There is certainly merit to this point of view, but I don't take my approach lightly and without having thought about it for some time. I spent over a year politely debating creationists in comments sections before I started making videos, so my perspective has been finely honed through the school of hard knocks. A recent exchange with a particular obnoxious fucktard in the comments section of one of my older videos provided a perfect example of exactly why I treat these people the way I do and inspired me to make this video to outline my motivations while using him to illustrate my point. Jonathan M doesn't communicate very clearly, so I've had to caption his rambling questions. PZ also didn't follow what specifically Jonathan was asking. He responded a little more clearly to the question once he was able to suss out the real meaning in the question: scienceblogs.com Note the Gish Gallop, the "I'm jus' asking" tactic, and the pants-ruining terror on his face. It's the most nonsensical question about embryology he could have asked, and here's why: a mouse HOX gene can be transplanted to a fly, and still be functional to produce the homologous structure. Lack of correlation? Holy frijoles, you have to be kidding me. Was PZ too mean to Jonathan? I'd probably argue that he wasn't mean enough. In each case the creationist statements are shown to be outrageously stupid by even the most rudimentary knowledge of science. In this episode it is shown the creationist organization The Discovery Institute use their willful ignorance of DNA as 'evidence' that DNA is designed. The callow argument is simple to counter in that take an object such as a beach, ignore everything you know about beach formation, make some bogus calculation to show that it can't happen 'by chance', then conclude the Neptune, Lord of the sea did it. It is also highlighted that the creationist organization, The Discovery Institute seems to have an irrational fear of sworn testimony. An interesting phobia given that meant that even though they are the chief proponents of intelligent design, and that they were enlisted in professional witnesses in the Dover vs Kitzmiller trial, they all withdrew at short notice (presumably sensing the inevitable humiliating rout of creationist/ intelligent design), and then started grousing that the ruling was all the fault of the judge.

In each case the creationist statements are shown to be outrageously stupid by even the most rudimentary knowledge of science. In this episode Ben Stein is taken to task over his inability to distinguish science from free speech. Stein claims that those who question evolution are discriminated against, whereas in reality this 'discrimination' is merely people getting held accountable for demonstrating their pathetic grasp of both the scientific method and scientific literature. In simple parody terms it would be like a medic claiming that 'I don't believe in sterilizing medical instruments, and if you say otherwise you are discriminating against me, and censoring my free speech.' The scientific literature is an open arena. Anyone who can sustain their claim with research and reason will get a fair hearing. Creationists think the only reason they cannot compete in this arena is due to prejudice, when in reality it is merely the fact that they don't do ANY research, let alone anything worthy of being published.
