Most of my youtube viewers seem to describe themselves somewhere along the lines of free thinking, independent minded secular humanists. Most of them have gone significantly against the grain at least once in their lives. Reflecting on that, many are so pleased to have shaken free of at least one popular concept that they now see for what it really is, and what they could have become, that they encourage others to analyze the popular opinions they hold as well. So it should come as no surprise that when I speak to that audience about the future of education the most popular terminology they throw around the in the comment section is "critical thinking," and the most popular use of that term involves the proposed magic bullet of curriculum improvement, which of course is to "teach critical thinking." Mmm doesn't that just feel good to say? Doesn't it feel good to hear? Those three little words just slip off the tongue and dance upon the eardrums of the "free thinking" community. The small, yet fundamental questions that create difficulty with the whole notion are... what the hell is "critical thinking" and how the hell does one "teach it?" Landing on a solid definition for "critical thinking" can be a bit tricky. Here are some different ways that it's been defined according to some different authorities on the matter with references provided. Mark Hoffman typically begins his elective course in Critical Thinking (CRT 100) by asking students what they did during the first hour after waking up that morning. Invariably, the first thing they did was make a decision—whether or not to get out of bed when the alarm went off, says Hoffman, a lecturer and coordinator of the Reading Program in BMCCs Developmental Skills department. More decisions follow—what to eat for breakfast, what to wear, whether to come to class. While some decisions are instinctive, some require real thought. In all cases, its important to be mindful before we make a choice or decision—not to act impulsively, but to approach it logically. A double objective Such mindfulness, he says, is the essence of critical thinking—an approach to learning and decision-making that has direct applications in the classroom and the outside world. In point of fact, Hoffmans critical thinking course has a two-pronged focus: In addition to building students awareness of the need to make logical, carefully considered decisions, the course helps them develop practical academic skills, such as outlining, note-taking and time management. Along the way, students learn to question their own hard-wired assumptions and prejudices, such as a reliance on stereotypes. Stereotyping helps us makes sense out of a complex world, but it represents mushy thinking—a reliance on easy answers, says Hoffman. We can put people everyone in a group and walk away saying, I understand you ...

Christopher Hitchens : quotes "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence." "The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more." "Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse." "Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you." "Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes ...

With increased societal polarization, especially political, where people are bombarded with "facts" and opinions by pundits and experts, too many people choose to blindly follow their pundit of choice like rats following the Pied Pipers, without really thinking and questioning. I've felt that if more people were exposed to critical thinking principles, they might at least be able to identify when statements, opinions and actions aren't completely rational. This video is about teaching some very basic critical thinking standards with the intent to intrigue the viewer enough about critical thinking to learn more about the subject.

The novel presents a future American society in which the masses are hedonistic, and critical thought through reading is outlawed. The central character, Guy Montag, is employed as a "fireman" (which, in this future, means "book burner"). The number "451" refers to the temperature (in Fahrenheit) at which a book or paper supposedly autoignites, though the actual temperature is just short of twice that[1]. Written in the early years of the Cold War, the novel is a critique of what Bradbury saw as an increasingly dysfunctional American society. A movie version of the novel was released in 1966, and it is anticipated that a second version will begin filming in 2009. At least two BBC Radio 4 dramatizations have also been aired, both of which follow the book very closely. Fahrenheit 451 en.wikipedia.org Buy it Here: www.amazon.com

Official 9/11 Fable To Become Part Of School Curriculum Government-supported effort to 'encourage critical thinking' actually encourages obedient regurgitation of lies Paul Joseph Watson www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv Tuesday, September 6, 2011 "We don't need no education....we don't need no thought control." In a week where the establishment is desperate to reinforce the official 9/11 fable, a government-supported charity group has embarked on a mission to include the state-approved version of events on the school curriculum in the UK as part of a bid to "demolish conspiracy theories" surrounding the attacks. As we reported yesterday, the launch of the project was timed to coincide with the unveiling of a macabre 9/11 "memorial" in Battersea Park, London, after which Mayor Boris Johnson resolved to carry out a "controlled demolition" of conspiracy theories to "remind people of the tragedy of what really happened". A website for the "9/11 London project" has been launched which includes downloadable lesson plans for teachers. The program is designed "to teach schoolchildren in Britain about the events of 9/11 and "demolish conspiracy theories" surrounding the attacks," reports AFP. The project is supported by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as well as establishment figures in Britain such as Common Purpose member Maqsood Ahmed, Lord West, Lord Carey, and Lord Fink, CEO of International Standard Asset Management (ISAM) and Treasurer of the Conservative ...

Whether or not you would like to partake in the 21 Day Challenge I talk about in this video, I still encourage you to try the "cancel, clear or delete the negative thought and REPLACE with a positive thought" exercise the next time you find yourself getting caught up in a self-defeating thought pattern, worrying/ obsessing about something, etc. I still encourage people to express their emotions and humanness! Absolutely! It's ok to feel sad, mad, frustrated- These emotions are always telling you something. It's up to you to figure out what they're trying to tell you. Sometimes they could be telling you that you're not on the right track, or perhaps something really sad did happen, so of course the natural response is to be sad... But sometimes, we're sad because of thoughts we're believing about ourselves that don't align with who we "really" are which is AMAZING! A lot of suffering occurs because of our limiting thoughts/ beliefs about ourselves and the world. If you've gotten into the habit of thinking really critical, limiting thoughts about yourself, you're most likely not *feeling* very good. If this is the case, sometimes just thinking a thought that is slightly more positive than your current thoughts will allow you to *feel* better. The better you feel, the easier it will become to manifest your desires. (Youtube "Abraham Hicks" if you haven't already.) So you may want to try this simple exercise as much as you can for a 21 day period in attempt to break the habit ...

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING -- Link to Part 2: youtube.com A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, comparing how a chimpanzee learns when compared with human children. An experiment conducted at St Andrews University revealed that while children tried to tackle a puzzle without trying to analyze it, chimps of the same age used logic and managed to solve it This test shows that the human child, even when given tasks that obviously have no meaning, follows the instructions given to them by the perceived authority figure, whereas the chimpanzees are more pragmatic, and exclude the extraneous steps. I feel that this is a good example of why it is important to raise children to believe as many true things and disregard as many false things as possible. Children are our shared future, and teaching them to think critically and rationally, so they can grow up to be mindful, effective adults that use reason to help build a better world is vitally important. www.A3Network.com. Experience Junkie "Parkour Chase". Parkour (or PK) is a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency. Originally developed in France, the main purpose of the discipline is to teach participants how to move through their environment by vaulting, rolling, running, climbing and jumping. Parkour practitioners are known as traceurs. They train to be able to identify and utilize alternate, more efficient paths. Parkour can be practiced anywhere, but areas dense with obstacles offer many training opportunities. Two primary characteristics of parkour are efficiency and speed. Traceurs take the most direct path through an obstacle as rapidly as that route can be traversed safely. Developing one's level of spatial awareness is often used to aid development in these areas. Also, efficiency involves avoiding injuries, both short and long term. This idea embodying parkour's unofficial motto is être et durer, meaning "to be and to last".[citation needed] Traceur Dylan Baker says "Parkour also influences one's thought processes by enhancing self-confidence and critical thinking skills that allow one to overcome everyday physical and mental obstacles". A study by Neuropsychiatrie de l'Enfance et de l'Adolescence (Neuropsychiatry of Childhood and Adolescence) in France reflects that traceurs seek more excitement and leadership situations than do gymnastic practitioners. This is a simple collection of quotes from people such as Bill Hicks and George Carlin all the way to Plato and Aristotle. I decided to make it, because sometimes you come across things such as these quotes that just stick in your mind. Therefore I decided to share it with you. I probably don't need to tell you that I am a huge fan of Bill Hicks and George Carlin. I first heard of Carlin a year ago, just after he died basically. At that time I also learned about Hicks. Funny (and sad) how you sometimes only learn about interesting people when they're dead. Anyways, enjoy the video and may it promote critical thought.

Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children's advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. In the age of the brand, logos are everywhere. But why do some of the world's best-known brands find themselves on the wrong end of the spray paint can -- the targets of anti-corporate campaigns by activists and protesters? No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the backlash against the increasing economic and cultural reach of multinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike, The Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger became revered symbols worldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a process whereby corporations discovered that profits lay not in making products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developing countries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their lifestyles.
