These tips are pretty basic, but I guess they could help even some collegiate athletes. Anyways, the first tip is to train in the preseason. Make sure you are running in the summer months so you come into the cross country season in good shape. It will make for a much more enjoyable and successful season. Next up, you need to eat healthy and get your sleep. You can be in great shape, but if you don't eat right, its like putting sand into the gas tank of a high performance machine. Stay away from highly processed foods and go for the good stuff like whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Sleep is also very important because that is when your body recovers from all the running that you are doing. You have to rest and recover so your ready for the school day and for the training and racing. Don't forget to set great goals. Pick a goal time that you want to accomplish for each race, and set goals for your training every week. If you don't have a goal, maybe you should talk to your coach and see what he/she thinks you could achieve. Cross Country running involves a lot of running on the hills. Go smooth and steady up hills but make sure to pick up the pace at the top of them. Go fast but in control on the downhills. Eventers from team USA and team Canada on their way to the 2010 WEG (World Equestrian Games) in Lexington, Kentucky - and a few others from Argentina, Ecuador, Holland and Mexico who've competed in the US recently. From my archives. At the 2010 WEG Tipperary Liadhnan and Mr. Wiseguy were withdrawn before inspection and Azteca was spun from the opening jog. This was obviously a big disappointment to the riders but eventing requires a partnership and it don't work if the other is not feeling well. The Canadian team got a silver medal with Great Britain in first, and New Zealand second. The highest placed individual was Michael Jung and Sam (GER), with William Fox-Pitt and Cool Mountain (GBR) and Andrew Nicholson aboard Nereo (NZL) at silver and bronze resp. The US team place 4th with the highest placed US rider being Boyd Martin on Neville Bardos. They placed 10th, not bad for an $800 race-track reject. It was the first time since 1978 that the World Championships of Eventing were held on US soil, and they had over 170000 spectators back in '78! I guess I'm mad about this sport. This video is the second leg of a three leg cross country flight from Titusville to Rockledge to Merritt Island and back to Titusville that my father and I made in our Mosquito XEL ultralight helicopter. My father flew the first leg and I flew the last two. Total distance is 48 statute miles as the crow flies but of course we didn't fly straight lines. We each did some sightseeing and exploring along the way. As you can see in the video there is lots of water along our route of flight so having the floats installed is a big safety multiplier just in case we were to lose an engine. Having floats means we may still have a helicopter instead of just letting it sink. As you can see I am wearing shorts cause that's the way we can do it here in Florida almost all year long. Allison Springer and Arthur (15:05) placed second and Boyd Martin and Otis Barbotiere (20:44) came in third. Karen O'Connor shows us she's still tougher than tough on Veronica (0:18) and later on Mr. Medicott (17:31) with whom she placed fourth. Here are a few key tips on how to glide up a hill---my favorite part of XC, but one which balks many. Try these simple drills, then go ski behind a good skier. And take a lesson! (Part 1 showed a few general key tips.) Note: this Series shows the standard basics of rhythm and Sport/Racing. I have other videos that show Touring techniques more suited to Everyday-type Casual skiers. Caution: In this video I forget to say my favorite ski word -- "glide" -- enough, plus I goof up a couple ideas. I say putting your full weight on a ski lets you grip, but that's when you glide. You grip when your feet pass each other, you drop down a bit, flex your ankle, tilt forward, then plant your foot---this "pounces" MORE than your bodyweight and lets you grip. Next glitch: I say it's falling body weight that propels you, but it's also a forward body ANGLE that lets you easily pole and kick to the rear, sending you gliding forward. Whew!
