A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. STORY: The Ocean Nova passenger ship, which runs tourist visits to Antarctica is registered under a Bahamas flag. It ran aground on Tuesday close to the San Martin Argentine naval base. Unsuccessful attempts were made to break the vessel free during the early morning high tide. A boat was sent by the cruise company to pick up the 74 passengers stranded on board. It is unclear whether Ocean Nova's 30 crew will also be evacuated. The navy says that after all the passengers are taken off they will determine how to get the boat free. There are no details on how the passenger ship became trapped in the first place.

Celia Ii was on its way out, and the sun was hitting the ship and making it glow magically! I got a perfect shot of it going by spring point lighthouse, and it passing Ice Traveler!!! Movie recorded on an Expedition Cruise to the Antarctic Circle, February/March 2011. On Sunday 6th March we were sailing through the Drake Passage back to mainland Argentina on our ship, the MS Expedition, when a big storm blew up. The Captain reported it was a Force 12, with gusts of wind upto 70 Knots and 30-40ft waves/swell. Certainly a lovely and exciting crossing, and totally living upto the name "Drake Shake", when storms like this happen on this stretch of water.
