A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. Evidence mounts against cruise ship captain
Maritime authorities, passengers and mounting evidence pointed toward the captain of a cruise liner that ran aground and capsized off the Tuscan coast, amid accusations that he abandoned ship before everyone was safely evacuated and was showing off when he steered the vessel far too close to shore. The Costa Crociera company, which owns the Costa Concordia cruise ship, released a statement refuting the earlier claims by Captain Francisco Schettino, saying that the captain had "made an error of judgment which has had serious consequences." The 18-deck ship accommodates 4370 passengers served by 1400 crewmembers. She was built in the Aker Finnyards drydock in Turku, Finland, where her sister ship Freedom of the Seas was also built. At over 154000 gross tons, she joins her sister ship Freedom of the Seas as the largest cruise ships and passenger vessels ever built. She is 1112 feet (339m) long, and cruises at 21.6 knots (40 km/h). On April 19, 2007, she was delivered to parent company Royal Caribbean[2]. On April 22, 2007 she made her first port of call Southampton, on a promotional visit.[3] She arrived at Cape Liberty Cruise Port on May 3, 2007. Liberty of the Seas is the second of the Freedom Class vessels. A third ship, Independence of the Seas, is scheduled for delivery in 2008. In 2009, the first in a new Genesis class of ships measuring 220000 gross tons is slated to displace the Freedom class as the world's largest passenger ships.
