The DP228 Crunch Lab, from DiMarzio pickups, John Petrucci's signature bridge wind. This particular one is with the bar magnet towards the neck. Played through a Peavey 6505+ and a Fulltone FD-2 MOSFET at some points. My opinions on this pickup: The DP228 Crunch Lab is midranged-voiced, tight, and aggressive, but still very sweet sounding and not at all harsh, which is unusual in a modern-output pickup. The voicing is most suited to metal and prog, but still can put together a great clean sound with the volume rolled back or split. Excellent lead sound but even better for tight rhythms. I don't know how it sounds with the bar towards the bridge, but for tighter rhythms it's recommended to have the bar facing the neck for downtuned metal. A song my buddy Bali wrote for a project we have. I don't play it that great but just wanted to put a better sounding clip of what the pickup sounds like. This is a demo of the Dimarzio pickup CrunchLab 7 I stuck into my (Indonesian) Ibanez RG7321 (with the bar facing the bridge). I think it sounds great. The amp is just a Peavy 6505+ with the gain around 1 o'clock. It is a very balanced pickup, but its special characteristic is the high amount of mids it has. Its bass is not overpowering which is perfect for higher tech riffing. Every note comes out clear. A con I can think of is that some people might not find the high amount of mids appealing. Personally I like the sound of other pickups for soloing, but for riffing this pickup sounds amazing.

Comparing the Crunch Lab to the Duncan Custom in the bridge position of the same guitar, an ESP Horizon NT II with maple neck-through and mahogany wings. LePou amp sims with various impulses. The Crunch Lab is smoother and more "polite" in the mids, slight more compressed, bigger thumpier low end. Custom has meaner mids (1.6k bump), sharper djentier highs, tighter lows. Crunch Lab sounds more open and neutral, has better cleans. Custom cuts better. Which do you prefer?

I just came home with these new pickups installed in my guitar. They are brand new pickups from Dimarzio which were made custom for John Petrucci's Ernie Ball signature model guitars. I swapped out an EMG 81 and 85 that I had in my guitar for 15 + years. The pickups were professionally installed in my '92 Jackson Kelly Professional model guitar. I had the luthier screw the pickups directly into the body of my guitar and had a push/pull pot installed to split both pickups into single coils. I basically started recording right when I got home and this is just a little improv playing. I am running straight from my guitar into an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra and then into my computer. I am running Logic Express and the guitar tones are coming from Amplitube metal.

Dimarzio Crunchlab (Bridge): The Crunch Lab™ is noteworthy (bad pun alert!) for what it doesn't do - it's not a screamer, and it's not about thundering lows. Its physical appearance is identical to the D Sonic™, but the internal design is a lot different. It's louder, and the highs have more depth. The lows and mids are more open, and this is crucial for playing chords with body and presence through a gained-out amp. The voicing of the pickup is also different enough to the point that John prefers the Crunch Lab™ to be installed in almost all of his guitars (including the JP Bari) with the solid bar toward the neck, regardless of the guitar's tuning. I would thank iheartguitarblog ( www.youtube.com for doing an excellent review of the cl/lf 7 versions. That video turned me on these great pickups. I installed the pickups in my main (and only) guitar: a les paul tribute 2010 with an asymmetrical (sanded by me) neck, Mallory 150k tone capacitors and much more. A great guitar, my friends. I have two push pulls (one for each pickup) to split the humbucker serial/parallel. I did not made the single coil split mod because , for me, the volume drop between the two modes is too much. With parallel you get a really nice chimey sound, with a little volume drop and some nice sparklin cleans. Recording has been done with: M audio fast track pro Digitech RP1000 (custom presets) After editing the whole video I noticed that i made some mistake here and there, but anyway, the main purpose of this review is to let you hear the nuances of these pickups. Great for higain, great for cleans. Also, I noticed that every die-hard JP fan has a musicman JP or some ibanez , which most of the time are bolt on , alder/basswood, with some mahogany tone block. So it's interesting to hear how they sound in a full mahogany, thick and glued neck guitar like the Les Paul. I hope you appreciated. I also have turned off every delay, chorus, reverb for these review. I tried to play as much as 'neutral' I could, without mimicing JP style or <b>...</b>

Hey guys, I just installed my new Crunch Lab and PAF Pro pickups in my PRS Tremonti, and I love them! I thought you might enjoy a demo, so here they are! I would have gone with the Liquifire for the neck position, but after talking with the Dimarzio techs, we felt the Liquifire might be too dark in the neck position of thick mahogany single cut guitar with 22 frets. The PAF Pro really cleans up the neck muddiness problem!

I play neck first on the clean sound and bridge first on the dist sound, direct to amp, and captured with a zoom q3hd video recorder. all the single coil sounds are boosted with the standard godin summit ct's hdr booster, the single coil sounded a bit soft without the booster on i combined dimarzio's original petrucci wiring diagram with seymour duncan's 2 HUMBUCKER 1 VOL 1 TONE 5 WAY SUPER SWITCH wiring diagram to get the combinations that i want, with an extra modification to get both inner coils working on the middle positions
