Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet

I've spent nearly a week using the latest 7-inch tablets (or are they e-readers?): the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire. In this video, I share an overview of both devices and I offer a purchase recommendation: The device choice depends on what you want to do.
Apple iPad - Thoughts From a 12 Year Old

So my son Tyler saved up, sold a gadget and did some extra chores for his Apple iPad. Somehow his arrived before mine last week — go figure. In any case, hes got a week under his belt with Apples new device and wanted to share his thoughts, just like he reviewed the first netbook over two years ago. Although I dont think Tyler will convince anyone to buy (or not buy) an iPad, he offers an interesting perspective — hes grown up in a world thats always had personal computers. Plus he likes to be on camera.

HD playback comparison on two UMPCs

Just to give you an idea in the performance difference between the new Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium and the older Q1P, I've got a comparison of H.264 playback. A 720p HD movie trailer in Quicktime, to be specific. At a 5.8 Mbps bitrate, this pushes a little beyond the limits of what should be expected from a UMPC, but I think it's important to see how these devices handle it.

iPhone ebook reading: TextOnPhone

Yesterday I mentioned TextOnPhone, an eBook web app for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Here's an eleven-minute walkthrough to give you an idea of what it offers. I specifically did this demo in a "worst-case" scenario by using EDGE, ie; I shut my WiFi radio off on the iPhone. You can see the performance of the experience, which overall, I think is very good. The application wisely caches ahead a number of pages so that you really don't need to wait for pages to load. There are some basic user customization settings and some excellent eBook reading lists and I'm very impressed that the app remembers where you left off in a book. Overall, I was pretty impressed in the short time I've used TextOnPhone.

Switcher adds Expose´ functionality to Windows Vista

Today I'm offering a short look at a free application called Switcher. It's for Windows Vista devices and only those with Aero functionality enabled. Switcher adds another useful way to navigate around through your active applications. There's a Tiled view that reminds me of Expose´ in Mac OS X, a Dock view and a simple Grid view. One keystroke combo is all it takes and you can also assign that combo to a mouse button.

jkOnTheRun- advance look at Verizon Voyager

The Verizon Voyager has been hotly anticipated and even called the "iPod killer". I wouldn't agree with that but must say the touch screen coupled with a second display and full QWERTY keyboard makes the Voyager a nice phone. Add full HTML web browsing that works pretty well and Verizon has a winner. This video overview shows the features of the Voyager, especially how good the web browsing experience is.

Skype on the Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium

After I got Skype to recognize the front camera on the Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium, it was time to put the device to the test. James and I routinely have video chats, some we even record and share, so I wanted to find out if I'd be able to use the new UMPC for this. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I guess a video equates to something like a million. Rather than write that many words, I'll let you judge the video. You'll get some early impressions of the HTC Shift from James during this slightly different Geek Session!

Earthcomber overview: personal radar for your phone

Although I'm showing Earthcomber on the iPhone, it works on multiple devices: Palm, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, even a standard cell phone that's web-capable. Earthcomber is touted as "personal radar for your phone" and that's a pretty accurate description. Although there are other location-based applications to find places and services in your location, I like Earthcomber's category and sub-category approach. It's a free service and easy to use, so give it a look when you're out and about.
