Masizakhe (let us build together)

"Masizakhe: Let Us Build Together" Directed By: Scott Macklin Produced By: Angelica Macklin Run Time: 63 Minutes audience.withoutabox.com/films/masizakhe "Masizakhe: Let Us Build Together" "Masizakhe: Let Us Build Together" is a feature-length documentary that focuses on the role that a new generation of activists are playing in shaping the future of South African society. This documentary was filmed in South Africa's Port Elizabeth area and the surrounding townships. Most of the people in this film live in small tin shacks without electricity or running water, yet they continue to use the only tool at their disposal: their voice, to try to help the people in their community. The depth of the poems they write and the songs they sing reach deep into the experience of living through oppression and dealing with an every-day reality that is the legacy of apartheid. "Masizakhe" is centered around a conversation by five cultural activists as they reflect on the meaning of apartheid and how it has shaped their contemporary lives. It weaves in and out of this conversation to historical stories, archival footage, poems, music, and face-to-face interviews over several themes that include: forced removal, classification based on race, economic disparity, language issues, activism in the 1970s and 1980s, and the use of popular culture to effect change. The stories of everyday heroes whose work has led to the end of systematic government oppression are woven with the stories of new ...

COME TOGETHER FOR THE CHANGE I am a cultural activist working on the street plays since last 9 years in Kanpur with Jan Chetna Kala Manch. We are a group of youths who formed this cultural group specially oriented to address the social issues geared towards creating a movement. We were all urban based cultural activist who would perform on the streets on very sensitive issues concerning the society like, riots, on governance, the educational system, on atrocities of police, women exploitation ,dalit atrocities etc. we received lot of media attention and we became a leading cultural group in Kanpur. We were also associated with various social movements and would perform and do cultural training programme with these movement groups. This experience made lot of impact on our thoughts, vision and our whole personality. It also gave us lot of exposure to see the various realities of life, the struggle of poor people, the discrimination due to the caste and communal factor, gender questions and problem of rural -- semi urban youth. All this experience brought new vigor, sensitivity and energy in our plays and production, this would attract large number of audience. Due to the serious performance, our group reached quite a higher stage of cultural activism when we got a chance to perform " Azadi ke Trane" in WSF, Mumbai, on a highly prestigious " Faiz Stage" in collaboration with Pratidhwani. There was no dearth of talent in our group but on the other hand there was a big vacuum ...

Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art

The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco is proud to present its new exhibition, Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art, organized by guest curator and scholar Margo Machida. Icons of Presence highlights the substantial role of printmaking and graphics as a powerful means of social expression for Asian American visual culture. It showcases both graphic art and posters from the landmark decades of the 1970s and 80s, and more recent work by Jim Dong, Nancy Hom, and Leland Wong, who played a pivotal role in the San Francisco Bay areas Asian American arts movement. Putting the work of these three Chinese American artists in a wider context, the exhibition and its accompanying catalog also emphasize the range of influences that have shaped their art and cultural activism. Icons of Presence is conceived as a counterpart to Asian/ American/ Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970. This national historical survey exhibition of Asian American art, with significant West Coast representation, is on view at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from October 25, 2008 January 18, 2009. Since the de Young show does not extend through the 70s or beyond the period that witnessed the rise of the Asian American movement and cultural politics Icons of Presence foregrounds the activist turn in Asian American visual art. By focusing on the work of these three individuals, Icons of Presence provides a slice of a larger history in American art that is both national and international ...

April 29th, 2007 marks the 15th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Riots. This same day cultural artist and community activist Bambu will release his Sophomore solo album on the heels of a critically acclaimed album with the Hip Hop group Native Guns. Entitled, "I Scream Bars for the Children" Bambu vehemently projects his thoughts and hopes of a world that can be possible; while dealing with the materialist conditions that the children and their families face today. "I'd like three square meals, some health care, a livable wage, affordable housing, and a relevant education." "I'm sorry we only have chocolate."

OLODUM

OLODUM.... A Samba-Reggae-Axe(Ah-Shay in Portuguese) ensemble from Brazil, and one of my favorites. Hope you enjoy them. FROM NARIN: Olodum is an internationally acclaimed Afro-Brazilian cultural group from Bahia, Brazil. Olodum (pronounced oh-lo-doon) was founded in 1979 as a bloco afro (African Bloc), a Bahian Carnival association highlighting African heritage and black pride through music, dance theater, and art. From their home city of Salvador da Bahia in Northeast Brazil, Olodum has dedicated itself to cultural activism in the struggle against racial discrimination and socioeconomic inequality. On stage Olodum takes its name from the Yoruba deity Olodumaré. In the mid 1980s, the head drummer in the group (Mestre Neguinho do Samba) experimented with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and mixed them with the Brazilian samba. He divided the large surdo bass drums into four interlocking parts and layered the high-pitched repique drums in additive rhythms on top. The result was a new style of music dubbed samba reggae that quickly dominated Bahian Carnival. During Carnival season the group now parades with some two hundred drummers, singers, and thousands of costumed members. But the group's activities go well beyond Carnival and music. Throughout the year they sponsor seminars, speeches, and conferences on social and political issues and publish a monthly news journal, Bantu Nagô. They operate a factory where they make drums, costumes and other items which they sell to the public ...

bell hooks: Cultural Criticism & Transformation

www.mediaed.org bell hooks is one of America's most accessible public intellectuals. In this two-part video, extensively illustrated with many of the images under analysis, she makes a compelling argument for the transformative power of cultural criticism. In Part One, hooks discusses the theoretical foundations and positions that inform her work (such as the motives behind representations, as well as their power in social and cultural life). hooks also explains why she insists on using the phrase "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy" to describe the interlocking systems of domination that define our reality. In Part Two, she domonstrates the value of cultural studies in concrete analysis through such subjects as the OJ Simpson case, Madonna, Spike Lee, and Gangsta rap. The aim of cultural analysis, she argues, should be the production of enlightened witnesses - audiences who engaged with the representations of cultural life knowledgeably and vigilantly. "The issue is not freeing ourselves from representations. It's really about being enlightened witnesses when we watch representations." -bell hooks

Michael Jackson • *They Don't Care About Us* feat. OLODUM • HQ

"They Don't Care About Us" is the fourth single from Michael Jackson's album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. © 1996 MJJ Productions Inc. *Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing) was the one who came to MJ with the request to make the music video for They Dont Care About Us, a sort of protest song off the HIStory album. The duo went to the slums of Rio de Janeiro, where they enlisted the cultural group Olodum to participate in the filming of the video, which was controversial in Brazil for the possibility that it would hurt Rios image. Lee and MJ ended up collaborating on a second music video for They Dont Care About Us, which is set in a prison but is also more of a montage-type spot, involving footage of global injustices. Although very different in tone and style, both videos are equally what you would expect from Lee, who is known for creating awareness of issues affecting marginalized peoples. He and MJ were a perfect fit. (the "Prison version" was banned on most music stations due to its violent scenes). The music was changed slightly to fit Olodum's style of drumming. The "Olodum version" (unofficial title) of the song has since become more popular than the original album version. Olodum is an internationally acclaimed Afro-Brazilian cultural group from Bahia, Brazil. Ex-KGB Officer Yuri Bezmenov - Cultural Subversion and Escape (1 of 3)

Yuri Alexandrovic Bezmenov, now known as Tomas David Schuman, was born in 1939 in the former Soviet Union and worked as a journalist for Pravda. In this capacity, he secretly worked as an officer for KGB. His true job was to further the aims of communist Russia. After being assigned to a station in India, Bezmenov began to resent the KGB-sanctioned oppression of intellectuals who dissented from Moscow's policies. He decided to defect to the West. Bezmenov/Schuman is best remembered for his Pro-American Anti-communist lectures and books from the 1980s. n 1984, he gave an interview to G. Edward Griffin. Bezmenov explained in this interview the methods used by the Soviet KGB to secretly subvert the democratic system of the United States. Tomas D. Schuman authored the book Love Letter to America, WIN, Almanac Panorama, Los Angeles 1984, ISBN 0-935090-13-4. Discussing the Role of Maturation in Social Activism

In order to address some of the fears that have been expressed relating to world governance, I take a few minutes to analyze likely causes of those fears and the options we have to address the need for maturity. I would like to encourage people to transcend the reductionist approach to government by taking responsibility for the social evolution of their very own culture with the effectiveness of constitutional amendments, especially the National Initiative for Democracy. Good research material on the subject: Clare Graves (Spiraldynamics) Lawrence Kohlberg (Theory of Moral Development) Jean Gebser (Structures of Consciousness) Jürgen Habermas (Validity claims and research that is aware of cultural evolution) Thanks for watching!

Women, culture, Shariah

this footage has taken from three different films to look into status and women struggle against injustiices. The first clip is about the symbolic mix marathon in 2005 (this was Musharaf s Regime, a dictator appeared with the face of enlightened moderation and earned lot of favors from the west) held by the civil society when Gujranwala Marathon ( arranged by the government) had been attacked by the religious groups. Especially they attacked women participants in that marathon, in response Joint Action Committee announced a mix marathon against the extremist elements, which was attacked by police itself. The video is very obvious of police brutality against human rights defenders. sencod clip is from a 5 mint film A Night on the Shrine where I wanted to Explore the women space in public areas and reflections of men over female presence in these areas. A shrine, which is sacred place for Muslims and people coming there, believes in Sufi interpretation of Islam, which is quite moderate in comparison of Sharia Interpretations. Though men present there are confused over women presence in shrines and quotes Sharia against women being allowed in public places but at the same time they dance, smoke hash and play music which are also banned according to same Sharia. So it was interesting contrast for me and I wanted to capture the confusion and messed up thinking of Pakistani men who are caught under the cultural and religious notions. the third clip is about the resistence of ...

We stand in solidarity with all those who struggle and resist against Race, Gender and Class oppression. The Committee consists of C-Los, ilaw, ReVision, and DJ ET. Recently, the group has evolved into a live band with the help of Jason (guitar/vocals), Asi (bass), Rex (keys), Lost One (percussion) and Darwin (drums).
