Battle of Britain class 34067 Tangmere hauled the Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carnforth to Carlisle and back to Farrington junction via the Settle and Carlisle line . The tour was operated by The Railway Touring Company and 34067 took over from the booked engine 46115 Scots Guardsman . 34067 is first seen slipping towards the Summit at Shap working well with 12 on the hook. The return sees 34067 near enough on time at Keld near Appelby and then at Stockber after the water stop at Appleby Station . Nice to chat to Austin and linesiders dad Peter today before and after the train past us .Slipped up at Stockber as I had the camera set on manual focus hence not as crisp as I would like plus the going away shot is not as loud as it should be as the Canon camera does not seem to like the rode mic .

Despite being Spring, the Railway Touring Company ran the latest 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' with the prefix 'Winter' anyway, however the harsh wind blowing did make it feel like it was still winter. After running on time all the way to Carnforth, 70013 is seen storming round the bend at Lowgill and into the Lune Gorge running more than 1 hour late for no apparent reason, with the driver clearly trying to regain time and a class 37 on the rear of the train, probably for extra tractive effort and for ease of shunting at Carlisle. We now move to Chapel Lane Level Crossing just outside Parbold, on the Wigan-Southport line, where 67029 restarts from a signal stop heading 'The Sandgrounder', operated by UK Railtours from Stevenage, and with 'Royal' liveried 67005 on the rear.

70013 Oliver Cromwell hauled the 4th Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carnforth to Carlisle over Shap bank and retuning over the Settle and Carlisle line later that afternoon .The Brit is first seen attacking the 1 in 75 climb past Scout Green and then on towards Salterwath . The return sees 70013 at Birkett Common in darkish conditions but at least it was dry .There is a clown at Scout Green crouched down on the track next to the signs on the line with his still camera . Thanks to Stu for updates and Phil for letting me use his USB lead . Perhaps in reflection I should have not let the coaches run past in the Scout Green shots .

Hey I was looking through the news and I found a fascinating article from BBC News Cumbria about a Roman Helmet, complete with face mask, found by a metal detector enthusiast, who wished to remain anonymous. Now, this find took place back in 2010, so it isn't exactly fresh news, but it was unknown to me, so I thought some of you might have missed it too. I believe the reason this article showed up is that this helmet was due to go up for auction on Oct. 7th. Well it did. In all, there were 6 bidders battling for this helmet; 3 by telephone, 2 in the room and one via the internet from California. It was sold for £2281250 / $3629469 to an anonymous client bidding by phone." The Crosby Garrett helmet, named for the hamlet in Cumbria where it was found, is believed to be from the 1st-2nd century AD. And historical documents suggest that it would have been worn by a Roman soldier as a mark of excellence in horsemanship. In the times when this helmet would have been worn, the Helm would have been a polished bronze and the faceplate would have been a polished white metal. There may also have been colorful streamers attached to it. Christies auction house's London head of antiquities, Georgiana Aitken, said: "This helmet is the discovery of a lifetime for a metal detectorist." Black 5 45305 (LMS no. 5305), a memorable performer over the line in the 80s, is seen entering Blea Moor Tunnel (after clearing Blea Moor Aqueduct) on her journey north in the hands of former Carlisle Canal and Kingmoor fireman, and preservation-era driver, Gordon Hodgson, before returning south over Shap in the hands of Micky Rawlins, in tricky conditions. The M6 was down to 2 lanes for most of the way between Kendal and Shap, and 1 lane at places. The A6, despite being gritted, was covered in snow and slippery; all worth it for a '5' in this form!
