For thousands of years the mountain we call Sawnee has stood as a highly visible landmark and an anchor to inhabitants of North Georgia. It is arguably the southernmost summit in the Blue Ridge range, making it the first link in the Appalachian chain, which reaches all the way to Maine. On the eastern ridge, runoff from boulders balanced on a rock outcropping slowly carved three uniform depressions in the stone. Those boulders eventually weathered, split and toppled down the north face, exposing what we now call the Indian Seats. The seats and the adjacent natural clearing may have served some ceremonial purpose for Native American inhabitants (Woodlands culture, later replaced by Mississippian, Muscogean, Creek and Cherokee) dating as far back as c. 500 BCE When white settlers entered the area in the early 1800s, a minor chief of the Cherokee Nation welcomed them. A skilled carpenter and farmer, Sawnee helped them build their homes in the area around present-day Cumming. Settlers agreed that Sawnee was one of the kindest and most giving people they had ever known. When he died, the grateful local citizens named the mountain in his memory. Issued in Canada July 1979 on Portrait E4-8338-B, flip side of "Draggin' 'Em Down The Line." Burton Cummings recorded a double live album in 1978 on tour between the "Dream Of A Child" and "Woman Love" albums, but it was never released. Burton feels the drumming wasn't up to snuff, and the entire project was shelved. The only two tracks salvaged were "Draggin' "Em Down The Line" backed with "Charlemagne," recorded at Hamilton Place, in Hamilton, Ontario. Both remained non-LP tracks until "The Best Of Burton Cummings" featured the A-side, and the B-side was issued as a bonus track on the 1999 remastered CD of "My Own Way To Rock." This rendition of "Charlemagne" is appreciably different from the album version. It rocks harder and there's an interesting change in the lyrics. "Draggin' 'Em Down The Line" charted in the RPM 100 on August 11, 1979 and spent four weeks stuck at #85; by October 6th it had disappeared. Burton posts here.
