According to legend, Nala was the young, handsome, and skillful king of Nishadha in central India. Damayanti, said to be the most beautiful girl in the world, was the daughter of King Bhima of Vidarbha, a neighboring country. One day Nala captured a swan. In return for freedom, the swan flew to Vidarbha and praised the virtues of Nala to Damayanti. After hearing about him, Damayanti hoped that he would fall in love with her. Soon after, Damayanti's father decided to find a suitable husband for his daughter and invited many princes to his palace. Several of the gods also sought her hand in marriage. On the way to the palace, the gods met Nala and told him to serve as messenger and announce their intentions to Damayanti. When he arrived at the palace, Damayanti marveled at Nala's good looks. Vijaya Kumaratunga was gunned down at his Polhengoda residence on 16th February 1988. I remember the incident just like yesterday. It has been 22 years since the popular Sri Lankan actor turned politician was brutally assassinated. Some disagreed with his politics and many of the view that he should have been better off doing acting and singing than politics. But most have forgotten he had contested the Katana seat from the SLFP ticket back in 1977 and pipped at the post to then UNP stalwart Wijayapala Mendis. UNP swept to power by 5/6th majority not surprisingly, but Vijaya's politics never stopped, he once more contested for Mahara by-election and narrowly lost to Kamalawarna Jayakody (UNP) by just 44 votes and my SLFP friends used to tell me it was UNP who did vote rigging and snatched victory from Vijaya. However, I have always admired Vijaya's humbleness than his politics. His dedication to politics often ended in him being imprisoned and finally on 16th Feb 1988 he was gunned down by the opponents who did not believe his politics.

Sathweni Dawasa' is Hemasiri Sellapperuma's poignant tale of the collapse of gypsy community in the run up to modernisation in Sri Lanka. Screen play by Somaweera Senanayake based on the 'Chitra Katha' published in 'Silumina' back in the late 1970s. Ravindra Randeniya portrays a larger than life character as the head of gypsy clan in trying to maintain order within which falls apart and finally succumbs to fate. Beautiful music by Maestro Khemadasa.
