Electric lightbulbs come to life and crawl about in this surreal animated film. Saverio Mercadante - Flute Concerto in D major (II. Andante alla siciliana) & Flute Concerto in E minor (III. Rondo russo) (Jean-Pierre Rampal)

Saverio Mercadante gained success and renown as an operatic composer during his lifetime, but at present, in an ironic twist of fate, his best-known work is a student project, six concertos for flute and orchestra, especially that in E minor, with its' daringly virtuoso rondo russo. Dating from 1813, when Mercadante was studying at the conservatory at Naples, it is modeled on a French concerto of the day but displays an effortless Italianate lyricism, confident use of the received forms, and even a few unexpected touches along the way. Mercadante's writing for the flute is idiomatic and is nicely highlighted by the strings-led accompaniment, lending credibility to the idea that Mercadante may have had himself in mind as the flute soloist. The Russian theme of the rondo is piped by the flute with a bit of a galop to it, accompanied by sharp little chirps in the orchestra. This is an extremely catchy theme, and it is no surprise that Mercadante does not stray far from it, even incorporating bits of it into otherwise unrelated episodes as the rondo speeds towards its conclusion. In this upload I've also added a section from a later concerto (1819), in D major, its' central andante, to be precise, which, with its' gentle melody and ornamentation for the flute over the strings' flowing lines (curiously, the piece is almost a throwback to the baroque period, with its' ABA structure), is a perfect "foil" for the jubilant rondo. Jean-Pierre Rampal plays these concertos with ...

Two versions of Oscar's couplets from "The masked ball"

No, Verdi hasn't composed another version of the familiar "Saper vorreste" (at least, not to my knowledge). As many of you are bound to know, the story of the gruesome murder of Gustave III has always attracted composers (bloodthirsty types, aren't they :-)): Verdi's version was actually one of the last to appear. To single out any other names: Mercadante and Auber. Now, I haven't heard Mercadante's opera, though I'm sure it would be delightful :-), but I have recently acquired the version of the great French belcantist (sorry, it's just what I like to call that type of composers :-)), Auber. It's actually very interesting to know that Verdi's libretto is actually a straight translation of the libretto Auber was using, though, of course, such recicling doesn't exactly mean that Verdi's music is bad, on the contrary, it's one of his best operas :-), a true masterpiece. Auber's work, on the other hand, may fall short of one's expectations (Amelia's big aria doesn't really make the point :-(), but it's still a feast for the ears, I would like to point out the first two acts that are quite outstanding. Now, to get to my point. I actually like the character of Oscar, who is the only ray of light in the whole "thriller" of an opera. And his or rather her music is quite funny: both composers used the opportunity and provided the soprano with two ballads, all four of which are cute :-) (well, it's a cute character). Presented here are Oscar's final arias in Verdi's and Auber's ...
