Mark Steyn on Danish TV: European elites drew wrong conclusion after WWII
Canadian Free Speech activist, publisher and writer Mark Steyn visited Denmark, to receive the Sappho Prize for Free Speech, and Dkr. 20000 for his activities as an advocate for free speech. Towards the end of the seven minute interview, Steyn mentions the obvious but forbidden notion: Interviewer Kurt Strand: Why isn't the European Culture strong enough to defend [itself against] this. Steyn: I think, since the Second World War, and even since the First World War, European elites have not believed in them selves or their own people. I think European elites drew the wrong conclusion at the end of the Second World War, when they said, 'never again', on the German death camps. They didn't really mean never again to standing up to intolerance and,.. They drew the wrong conclusion; they thought it meant rejecting nationalism, rejecting national identity, rejecting your own cultural inheritance. This clip is from the Danish TV show called 'Eldorado' from 1984 - hosted by Jørgen De Mylius. The song is 'Misbrugt og forladt' (Abused And Left Alone) - sung by Sanne Salomonsen and written by Anne Linnet, who in this clip is 'playing' the violin. This song is one of my all time favourite songs. I will never get tired of it. The words and the music just fits so perfect together. It's a song that really can make you break out in tears - especially if you know of unrequited love, but also if you just sit down and listen to the words. And Sanne sings the song perfectly. It couldn't be sung better by any. Another songs that comes close to this one (talking favourites) and also sung by Sanne is 'Det er ikke det du siger', but 'Misbrugt og forladt' is my number one. opening of Danish TV-show Riget (The Kingdom in English) from Lars Von Trier. The translation of the spoken text: The Kingdom Hospital rests on ancient marshland where the bleaching ponds once lay. Here the bleachers moistened their great spans of cloth. The steam evaporating from the wet cloth shrouded the place in permanent fog. Centuries later the hospital was built here. The bleachers gave way to doctors and researchers, the best brains in the nation and the most perfect technology. To crown their work they called the hospital The Kingdom. Now life was to be charted, and ignorance and superstition never to shake the bastions of science again. Perhaps their arrogance became too pronounced, and their persistent denial of the spiritual. For it is as if the cold and damp have returned. Tiny signs of fatigue are appearing in the solid, modern edifice. No living person knows it yet, but the gateway to the Kingdom is opening once again. I dont know the song, but they are clearly singing something like "moritori te salutant" :)

Tommy Seebach - Du er det dejligste (Danish TV) - ((STEREO))
Tommy Seebach was one of the most popular singer/song writers in the 70's and 80's in Denmark. Tommy could write pop tunes - catchy pop tunes and he wrote song after song in those years for both himself and other artists. Tommy also competed in the local Danish Eurovision (ESC) 8 times and won 3 of them. The last time he took part in the local ESC was in 1993 with the song 'Under stjernerne på himlen'. He won and came to the internationally ESC, where his song failed - really failed. It became the end of his career, as both his loyal fans and the press turned their backs to him. Tommy started to drink, got divorced and couldn't get a new recording contract. After years of drinking Tommy one day decided to stop drinking and he actually managed to get small jobs on bars playing his old music. But in 2003 he suddenly got a heart failure and died only 53 years old. Tommy never got the respect he deserved the last years he lived. I have heard he became a bitter man, which is understandable. Here is one of my favourite songs by Tommy. It's called "Du' det dejligste" (You're The Sweetest (or: Most Wonderful)) and has some of the best lyrics ever written in Danish. The lyrics are just SO beautiful and well-written and fits the music perfect. It's from a Danish TV show called Eldorado from 1983.
