The Hastings College Choir performs a Renaissance marching song and chanson for the 2010 Commencement Concert. Dr. Fritz Mountford, conductor; Sean Anders & Matt Seivert, fiddles; Liz Nasci, trombone. The French song lyric, by an anonymous writer (or more likely passed down and altered by oral tradition) is frivolous and a little earthy. Our loose translation follows: "On the way to market in Arras (where you see unexpected things!), I encountered a 'foreigner' (and you know what that means!). He said, 'listen, my dear' (now you see: unexpected things!), 'I would like to offer you some money,' (and you know what that means!). Orlando di Lasso's polyphonic chanson is one of several Renaissance settings to use the once-well-known song as a basis for his composition. Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The college is located in Hastings, Nebraska.
