Traditional Passover Song - sang by me and my eldest daughter for the purpose of having a video our younger children could watch and sing along with. (please forgive any mispronunciation of the last stanza that is in Hebrew... we are not Hebrew speaking people... yet)
Dayenu means "that would have been enough" in Hebrew. It's a song that is a traditional Passover song. So why would a Christian sing it? Well, the Last Supper was a Seder (Passover meal), and Jesus was Jewish (duh). So, in memorial of the Holy Week prior to Easter, I felt a Passover song would be a good way to commemorate it. And this is the only one I could barely sing. Please forgive my broken Hebrew. You have now seen a Korean musician play a Hebrew folk song. You won't see that often, so go out and buy your Lotto ticket now before the flying pigs swoop down on us. Translation: Verse 1: Had God only led us out of Egypt, it would have been enough. Verse 2: Had God only given a day of rest, it would have been enough. Verse 3: Had God only given the Torah (law), it would have been enough.
Who can thank Gd enough for his mercy when he delivered us from Egypt? An old friend of mine said there was a version of this in Ivrit, though I have always heard it in the way it is said here. Before flying to Sydney to meet with 500000 other young pilgrims from around the world. Concluding with a vocational celebration with Kiko. Some pilgrims sacrificed largely in hopes to attend. Dayenu (2007) engulfs two dancers in a relational world, one seeking to represent the utterances of the heart and the other the mind. The emotional content speaks of searching and finding, taking what is necessary, and continuing on separate paths. The movement explores carving, threading, fluidity, and sharpness, with a use of negative space between the two dancers.
