Randy Newman - "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" from his 1972 album "Sail Away" (Reprise). On his third studio album, Randy Newman found a middle ground between the heavily orchestrated pop of his debut and the more stripped-down, rock-oriented approach of 12 Songs, and managed to bring new strength to both sides of his musical personality in the process. The title track, which Newman has described as a sort of commercial jingle written for slave traders looking to recruit naïve Africans, and "Old Man," in which an elderly man is rejected with feigned compassion by his son, were set to Newman's most evocative arrangements to date and rank with the most intelligent and effective use of a large ensemble by anyone in pop music. On the other end of the scale, "Last Night I Had a Dream" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" are lean, potent mid-tempo rock tunes, the former featuring some slashing and ominous slide guitar from Ry Cooder, and the latter a witty and willfully perverse bit of erotic absurdity that later became a hit for Joe Cocker (who sounded as if he took the joke at face value). Elsewhere, Newman cynically ponders the perils of a stardom he would never achieve ("Lonely at the Top," originally written for Frank Sinatra), offers a broad and amusing bit of political satire ("Political Science"), and concludes with one of the most bitter rants against religion that anyone committed to vinyl prior to the punk era ("God's Song [That's Why I Love Mankind]"). Governor Mark Dayton holds a press conference to announce a symbolic veto of the recently passed anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment. Dayton acknowledges his veto will not prevent the amendment from going on the 2012 general election ballot, but since it was sent to him in the form of a bill he has the option of signing or vetoing it. He is joined by Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner-Salon, Senator Scott Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis) and Representative Karen Clark (DFL-Minneapolis) who are leading the charge to defeat the amendment on the ballot.

In Mark Dayton's Inaugural Speech he mentions "Working Together" 13 times. He even said that if the legislature can put a balanced budget on his desk without raising taxes he would sign it. And that is just what the Legislature did, and they even increased spending by 5%. But Mark Dayton didn't sign it like he said he would. Because also in his inaugural speech said he would insist that Minnesota's tax burden becomes more "Progressive". So much for "Working Together".

8mm film shot in 1970 of downtown Dayton Ohio as part of a film project during my Junior year at Chaminade High School. Filmed by Joseph Slonaker, Gus Miklos and Steve Murphy. I remember we showed it in the auditorium set to the music of "Classical Gas". We wanted it to be "quick cuts" just like the famous film shown on the Smothers Brothers show of art work set to the same music. Of course we had no editing equipment, so we had to shoot it that way in the camera. It took weeks of walking around in our spare time to get this 8 1/2 minutes of film. Looks pretty cheesy now, but at the time everyone thought it was pretty far out and groovy, man! You can make out some of the old buildings of Dayton that are since long gone.

8/23/2010 During morning rush hour traffic on I-675 in Dayton, Ohio a 19yo in a 87 Pontiac Firebird was speeding in excess of 100mph and passing traffic on the left shoulder when ye hit a gardrail and going airborn into a concrete orerpass support breaking his car into 4 major chunks and thousands of other tiny bits causing the entire highway to be closed for more than 5 hours. The teen was ejected from the car on inpact and was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital where he (was at last check) in the ICU in critical condition.
