Free flight to MIT Media Lab, Science & Politics working together

Ask the President-Elect has ended, and unfortunately, we didn't get enough participation to fly anyone out to MIT. We couldn't even get get 1000 voters. :( That being said, we did gather a rather nice set of partners, and there's hope that we'll get something similar off the ground early in the Obama administration. Keep an eye on www.communitycounts.com ===Old Description=== www.bigdialog.org Help change government and get a free flight to MIT too. What is quantum tunneling?

Transcript: www.davidcolarusso.com This video is an adaptation of an earlier piece of mine--Perspective on quantum mechanical tunneling. That film, however, was designed for a unique audience, and I felt its overall length was limiting its appeal here. So I've repackaged it as one of my Explainer episodes. I Hope you enjoy. People have been asking for the math. So here it is. The Sun's core temp is ~13.6 MK. For hydrogen nuclei the Coulomb barrier is roughly 0.1 MeV. This corresponds to a temperature in excess of 1 GK! Luckily, tunneling and the distribution of speeds among nuclei lower the actual temperature required. So without tunneling even the Sun's core isn't hot enough for fusion. To see most of this worked through, check out this link: burro.cwru.edu for a less mathematical explanation, try: en.wikipedia.org The Tabletop Explainer is an intermittent educational vlog presenting answers to viewer questions, brief science lessons, and ideas for teachers and students. Rocket-Powered Red Wagon of Science

There's only so much momentum in the world. Our pilot starts with none, momentum being the product of mass and velocity. Then suddenly, it seems, there is momentum where once there was none. The CO2 sprays backwards with a sizable momentum, and nature compensates, propelling the wagon forward and assuring the two add up to zero. Thanks conservation of momentum.

Change the Debate. Will this have a "net" effect? (Election '08)

==== UPDATE ==== FYI, I was a signatory to the Open Debate Coalition's call for a change in the Oct. 15 debate format. You can find the specifics at tinyurl.com In part, we asked for the inclusion of user submitted and selected questions. ======= Old Description ======= The Commission on Presidential Debates has settled on three debates this fall, and one of them "may include" questions submitted via the web. We think that America can do better. So we're letting the community submit and select questions for the candidates. If we can reach a few hundred thousand voters on this forum, we believe the candidates will be compelled to answer our top questions. We want this to be something new. So we've structured things to promote full answers from the candidates. There are no time limits for replies, and we're going to ask you to vote on whether or not the replies were complete answers, "Was that an answer to the question?" not "Did you agree with the answer?" So it will be in the candidates' interest to answer them fully off the bat. However, this only works if people participate. So please, spread the word by sharing this video or emailing your friends about the site www.communitycounts.us

Youthful Indiscretions, MySpace, & Choosing Candidates

www.comunitycounts.us My question for the YouTube Debate, "Senator Obama, given the advent of sites such as MySpace and the ubiquity of camera phones, today's youthful indiscretions often become a matter of public record. You yourself have written about trying cocaine in your youth, and my guess is you wouldn't be here had we learned of this first-hand through a YouTube video or Flickr photo. My question to you is, 'How do you see this generation's new relationship with privacy effecting the candidates we choose as they themselves begin to vote and run for public office?'"

How to build a simple electric motor, plus how it works.

The Tabletop Explainer is an intermittent educational vlog presenting answers to viewer questions, brief science lessons, and ideas for teachers and students. It is a feature of my blog "Tilts at Windmils" which can be found at www.davidcolarusso.com Download the background music, Time to Funk by Trafic de Blues: www.jamendo.com ======================== TROUBLESHOOTING & FAQ ======================== First, it's important to understand the context of the "Build Your Own Motor..." video. It's a demonstration aimed at solidifying the ideas presented in two earlier videos. If you haven't already, you should watch the whole set: 1) What is the magnetic field? www.youtube.com 2) Electricity & Magnetism Hand Rules (part one) www.youtube.com 3) How to build a simple electric motor, plus how it works. www.youtube.com The main idea here is that charges moving through a magnetic field experience a "push" perpendicular to the direction of their motion. This force is also dependent upon the direction of the magnetic field. The fact that the wire is stripped on only one side alternates the current from "on" to "off" every half rotation. So halfway through the spin, the ring coasts through until it gets current again receiving a "kick." It's a poor man's commutator. The particulars of this kick/force are discussed in the second video. Armed with the knowledge from the above videos, you should be able to troubleshoot most of the problems that arise. The key is to make sure you understand ...
