So much good info. NEVER DECLAW A CAT!!! --------------- Part of the problem is greedy vets who don't give full disclosure. They tell the client it is "simply permanant removal of the claws" . they make it sound easy and pretty. Declawing is 10, TEN, amputations of the cat's toes, bones ligaments and tendons,and the cats actually walk on these toes, so they are left with pain and crippling gait for the remainder of their lives. Four paw declawing is an even worse horror. Imagine not even being able to scratch at itch. In another forum just yesterday a new person came in and wanted to know why their cat, who they'd had declawed 6 months ago, was acting like her feet hurt. Either the person is an incredible moron, or the vet lied about the procedure. And of course there's always at least one thread where someone had their cat declawed and now they want to dump the cat. People who do this thing, knowing what it entails, apparently place so little value on the pet that dumping the cat is just the next step after having the cat's toes amputated. --------------- What do people do when their cat scratches their furniture in Europe, where it is ILLEGAL to have a cat declawed? This was the day after I brought my cat home from the vet. He was a found kitty and whoever his owners were before had gotten him de-clawed but whoever did the de-clawing missed a dewclaw. I'm not really sure how that happens... There was also a bone chip in his other paw from the terrible de-clawing job that had formed an abscess. So he ended up getting the one dewclaw and one of his little kitty toes amputated to get rid of the abscess. I felt bad, poor boy just looked so miserable.

So it is a major orthopedic procedure and it should be done by a veterinarian who has a lot of experience because it is a potentially very painful procedure and the cat should stay in the hospital for at least 24 hours after the procedure on very good pain medication. The next thing is that there are a lot of really great options to explore before you are thinking about doing the drastic declaw, the first thing is scratching paws, like sisal scratching paws work great with cats and the other is soft paws which are vinal plastic coverings of the cat nails so that they are less likely to damage any of your furniture or scratch anyone. There are a few instances where decline can be considered and the first instance is when the cat is showing aggression or harming anyone in the household and, that maybe another animal or a person or child in the household and the second reason would be if the cat is leaving with immunocompromised person and a cat's scratch could be very detrimental. The West Hollywood City Council passed landmark legislation on Monday, February 1st, 2010 banning the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores unless from rescues and shelters. This law will prevent the sale of cats and dogs in West Hollywood from cruel puppy and kitten mills. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the City Council. According to coverage by NBC Los Angeles, the ordinance stems from an investigation of a West Hollywood pet store, Elite Animals, by the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) which uncovered evidence that the shop allegedly misled consumers by selling puppy mill dogs and broke federal law by importing animals for resale. Social Compassion in Legislation reports that the West Hollywood City Council not only received emails from local and state supporters on its proposed legislation but also from groups and individuals across the country and even as far away as the United Kingdom. The legislation "could be the beginning of the end of puppy mills and it's happening in West Hollywood, one of the most progressive cities on animal welfare issues," Ed Buck, Director of Social Compassion in Legislation. Statistics show that approximately 25% of cats in America are declawed, compared to the 0% in the 38 countries who have already banned the practise. The name "Declawing" is quite misleading, yes it does remove the claw, but it also removes the tip of the toe. This is the same as a person having their fingers removed to the last knuckle.
