For Dr. Payne's account of his work and how he got the dead piglets see www.youtube.com The technique of time-lapse photography is employed to illustrate the rapid removal of carrion (4 days reduced to approximately 6 minutes). The film demonstrates the sequence of tissue destruction and the role of insects in the ultimate dismemberment of the pig carcass and soil movement. The pink and purple beads were added to show the intense activities of the insects in moving the carcass and soil. Payne writes..."My study was the first "detailed" study of succession in animal decomposition and the first with the pig as the model. The significance of the pig is that it closely approximates the human body (skin, body hair, size etc.) so the data generated could be used in modern forensic science to approximate the time of human deaths. At that time it was simply not possibly (moral/ethical/legal concerns) to perform decompositon studies with human corpses, I know because I tried and was denied. Even so there were many instances where some concerned person buried my research pigs." The pigs used in the experiment were dead when Jerry Payne picked them up from local farmers. Mama pigs (sows) often lay down on their tiny piglets and crush them. 120-day time lapse of a pig head decomposing, with help from a surprising variety of animals. 1080p HD Stock footage available at JCMDI.COM V06905a This footage was shot as part of a taphonomic study of the impact of environmental conditions on blunt-force bone trauma. The head specimen shown was purchased from a commercial meat plant and then subjected to 120 days of environmental exposure while being photographed every 3 minutes over a 120 day period. Those 51000+ images were then "thinned-out" so that only the 3100+ images showing significant change remained for this version of the video. While larger predators were prevented from entering the study area so as to avoid them carrying-off the specimen, smaller animals had free access. One of the biggest surprises was how voraciously the Ground Squirrels stripped the remaining tough skin, long after the insects had finished with the soft tissue. Also captured in this sequence are lizards, toads, mice/rats, and a variety of birds. Not suprisingly, nothing is wasted in nature . Studies like these help law enforcement forensic experts learn more about natural processes and environmental effects on tissue and bone, ultimately aiding in identifying human remains, cause/time of death, and may even help solve old cold cases.

This is a time-laspe video of some fruit -banana, apple chunks, kiwi, lemon, grapes- deteriorating over exactly 3 weeks. The pictures were taken several times per hour at first then the rate was slowed down to once per hour toward the end. It is played back at 30 fps initially the replayed at a much faster rate. I used a Canon PowerShot S3 IS and Granite Bay time-lapse software for the video and made the music using Sony Acid Music Studio. A larger, clearer version in Quicktime can be seen at: webiocosm.com

Creating wonderful vermi compost from the kitchen waste in the terracotta pots called the Kambha from www.dailydump.org When kitchen waste is sent to landfill, air cannot get to the organic waste. Therefore as the waste breaks down it creates a harmful greenhouse gas, methane, which damages the Earth's atmosphere. However, when this same waste is composted above ground at home, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically which means hardly any methane is produced, which is good news for the planet. And what's more, in less than 2 months , you get a free fertiliser for your garden and plant pots to keep them looking beautiful.
