It was, in history, especially in culture, roundly considered the cultural heart of Tibet, Dege is an isolated town located a mere 13km from the Yangtze and the border of Tibet autonomous region. The dialect spoken here considered very cultured and in some way different from those of other area of Tibetan dwellings. Since before the 15 century, the seat of the Kingdom of Derge - the most powerful of the five kingdoms of East Tibet. Fiercely independent and powerful, it was ruled for 47 generations by hereditary kings under whose rule Dege's political and religious influence spread across the whole of Kham. The Grand Coteau Historic District is one of the few primarily rural districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Grand Coteau is noted for its magnificent trees that form alleys, groves, and gardens. Within the district there are over 70 structures designated as architecturally significant. Dege Parkang houses blocks for most of the works of classic Tibetan literature and all five schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The Parkang also prints from its collection of over 500 "picture blocks" which include images of Buddhas, deities, mandala, and ritual prints. Today, the Dege Parkang prints books and images from its collection of over 300000 woodblocks. These include renowned full editions of the Buddhist Kangyur and Dengyur, commentaries and histories of Buddhist thought, royal histories of Dege, astrological, medical and musical texts. The Dege Parkang is one of the most important traditional cultural institutions of Tibet. Founded in 1729 by the most famous of the Kings of Dege, Denba Tsering , the Parkang is a living repository of Tibetan learning and culture: a printing house, temple, library and museum in one institution. Dege (land of mercy) - The cultural center of Kham and the birthplace of King Gesar. The mesmerizing Yilhun Lhatso Lake is named appropriately after Drungmo (King Gesar's love) visits this site and falls in love with the beautiful scenery. In the background you can see the Dege Trola mountain. Troola Mountain (Queer Shan in Chinese) traverses from northwest to southeast in the Derge County. It covers an area of 7346 square kilometers. Today, the Dege Parkang prints books and images from its collection of over 300000 woodblocks. These include renowned full editions of the Buddhist Kangyur and Dengyur, commentaries and histories of Buddhist thought, royal histories of Dege, astrological, medical and musical texts. The Dege Parkang is one of the most important traditional cultural institutions of Tibet. Founded in 1729 by the most famous of the Kings of Dege, (choegyal) Tenpa Tsering , the Parkang is a living repository of Tibetan learning and culture: a printing house, temple, library and museum in one institution. Welcome to the AMD Resource Center, presented by the Angiogenesis Foundation. This animation will explain how wet AMD causes vision loss. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease that causes progressive damage to the macula, a central region of the retina. The retina is the light receiving nerve layer located in the back of the eye. The macula contains the densest population of nerve cells, called photoreceptors, and is particularly important for seeing detail and maintaining the central part of our vision. Central vision is important for ordinary daily activities like reading, driving, dialing the telephone, and recognizing faces. The macula is composed of several layers of specialized cells. The photoreceptors sit atop a layer of cells called retinal epithelial cells (RPE). Underneath these layers is a thin lining called Bruch's membrane. Beneath Bruch's membrane is the choroid, a network of blood vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to the macula. As the eye ages, debris from the RPE cell layer, and surrounding tissues accumulates above and within the Bruch's membrane. The debris form deposits called drusen. The presence of drusen is usually the first sign of early dry AMD. As drusen accumulate, they can cause inflammation. Inflammatory cells are then recruited to the retina, and these cells, along with the RPE, begin releasing growth factors that cause blood vessels to grow.
