News Update: Steve Jobs Breaks Silence on Foxconn Technology Group's Worker Suicides

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs publically commented for the first time on the recent spate of worker suicides at Taiwanese iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group, saying, "It's very troubling" and that Apple is "all over" Foxconn to end the unfortunate deaths. Jobs, who spoke at a tech conference Tuesday night in California, added that Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Group, is "not a sweatshop." Foxconn officials said today that the company will increase wages by a 30% minimum, which is higher than last week's estimate, as it juggles its reputation while dealing with ten deaths this year. "It's been a while since we increased wages, hence the decision,'' said Hon Hai spokesman Edmund Ding. However, "raising pay and the suicide issues are two separate matters." Apple, Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ) and Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) are probing Foxconn's working conditions, and Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou has taken precautionary measures including installing nets on dormitory buildings and hiring counselors for workers. "The situation at Hon Hai is negative for Apple, so they need to work together to try to resolve this," said technology analyst Jenny Lai, who added that almost 70% of Apple's products might be manufactured on Foxconn grounds. Shares of Apple are trading up 0.16% Wednesday afternoon at $261.26.

A telemarketer (call center worker) addresses customers and other telemarketers about phone manners.

A telemarketer addresses customers and other telemarketers around the world about phone manners. This is partly in response to YouTube videos about Dell customers abusing telemarketers, BT (British Telecom) customers abusing telemarketers, a crazy old lady accusing a telemarketer of being as bad as a rapist and causing miscarriages, a call center worker named Roberto calling a customer a "little girl, little girl," and so on. The call center worker addresses pet peeves and also offers a solution to help telemarketers empower themselves (such as a labor union.)

Eliminating the Worker

One way or the other, the goal of Capitalist enterprises has always been to eliminate the worker. Sure, when "human resources" are in short supply it becomes temporarily necessary to (grudgingly) grant workers better pay and conditions, but the optimal state for any business is always to completely eliminate the human workforce and replace it with cheaper alternatives (that complain and jump from buildings less) like machines. In the short term, while machines are expensive and workers comparatively cheap, that may even lead to rising wages like in many developing countries. In the long run, with worker costs steady and machine costs decreasing, the human worker's days are numbered. And with intelligent systems advancing in leaps and bounds, few white-collar jobs are safe. So industry will create more high-tech jobs? Of course not, the whole idea behind high-tech is to replace many low-skilled workers with an increasingly small elite of high-tech workers that control the networks of the new and willing robotic/computational working class. In a humanist system with a measure of equitable distribution, the decreasing need for a workforce would lead to decreasing workloads. In a system where humans are mere resources on the other hand, their decreasing value will lead to worse and worse working conditions. While robotic and intelligent computational systems go down in price in terms of the effort and resources it takes to manufacture them, human beings are static in this ...

Apple

Why Apple and Others Are Nervous About Foxconn The Chinese maker of iPhones and iPads has seen a rash of suicides—which may be a price of turning out low-price, high-quality goods By Stephanie Wong, John Liu and Tim Culpan THIS ISSUE Terry Gou says he has no idea why so many of his employees are killing themselves. Gou is the founder and chairman of Foxconn, the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer—the maker of iPhones and iPads for Apple (AAPL), computers for Dell (DELL), and countless other devices for well-known high-tech customers around the world. So far this year, 10 Foxconn workers have committed suicide. "From a logical, scientific standpoint, I don't have a grasp on that," Gou told reporters on May 27 at a press conference at the company's vast production facility in Shenzhen, China. "No matter how you force me, I don't know." Ask around among the more than 250000 workers at the Shenzhen complex, and you'll find explanations. One 21-year-old assembly-line worker, who asked that his name not be used, says conditions at Foxconn make his life seem meaningless. He says conversation on the production line is forbidden, bathroom breaks are kept to 10 minutes every two hours, and workers get yelled at frequently. No one disputes that Taipei-based Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai, has cultivated a tough culture. The company generates more revenue in a year than Apple, Dell, or Microsoft (MSFT). It has grown in profitable obscurity to become an industry ...
