Australia Day 2012 - riots, protests, cannibalism? Nah, just crap journalism

Read this article: www.abc.net.au 26 January 2012: 'Amnesia Day'. WTF happened? People gathered in front of Old Parliament House to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. The peaceful day was suddenly interrupted when someone announced that Tony Abbott was speaking to the press only meters away from the site. (It is important to know that, that very morning, the mainstream media (eg. Sky News) had reported that Abbott had made a provocative statement to the press - that the Embassy should be removed - which predictably caused anger among the Embassy crowd. As it later turned out, the media had distorted Abbot's actual words, which were: "...I think a lot has changed since then and I think it probably is time to move on from that". The events that followed can be traced back to this sub-standard and incompetent bit of shitty journalism. Whichever way you look at it, Abbott's statement was ill-chosen - given the significance of the day - implying as it did that the Embassy no longer served a vital purpose and that Aboriginal people should get over the past, accept a token apology, and "move on". Nevertheless, if Abbott's actual words had been reported correctly, the Embassy crowd might not have reacted with such anger. Instead, the Embassy crowd rushed to confront the Leader of the Opposition about his inflammatory statement. Within minutes, they had grown and surrounded the glass-walled restaurant, chanting/banging on the windows, disrupting the ...

NATO Protests - Occupy Demonstrators "Kettled" at Jackson and LaSalle

Occupy demonstrators stop and rally at Jackson and LaSalle streets at the end of a day of marches and violence at the hands of Chicago Police. In this video you can hear organizers telling everyone to "go home". Suddenly, a phalanx Chicago Police wearing riot helmets and carrying batons advanced at a trot west on Jackson and formed a menacing line anchored at the corner of the Board of Trade Building. No order to disperse was given. You can hear me asking repeatedly if we were being detained or if we were free to leave. I received no answer at any time. Chicago Police Superintendent McCarthy arrived on scene and conferred with his commanders. Shortly after this last clip ended, the police moved aside and let the demonstrators proceed west on Jackson in an attempt to disperse. It was only minutes after these events that a police van struck several demonstrators without warning, injuring one who was transported to the hospital. Police Use Force Against Occupy Oakland Demonstrators - October 25, 2011

Riot police used truncheons, tear gas, stun grenades and "less lethal" weapons in an hours-long attempt to turn back hundreds of protesters in downtown Oakland on the evening of Tuesday, October 25th. The extraordinary scenes played out some twelve hours after police used chemical agents to clear the tent city that had occupied Frank Ogawa Plaza for the previous two weeks. At least 85 were arrested during that morning raid; no word yet on the evening arrests, though KCBS reported at least 5 additional protesters were arrested.

Video: Violence erupts at 'illegal' student protest in Canada

Week-long demonstrations over a proposed rise in university tuition fees have erupted into violence in Quebec. Police in Montreal clashed with thousands of students who accuse the government of sabotaging negotiations for a settlement. Riot police have so far arrested 85 people after a government exclusion of a student group from talks triggered activist ire. Students have flooded Montreal's streets over the past few days, up in arms over tuition fee hikes that would see costs rise by 75 percent over the next five years. Thursday's riots were declared illegal after demonstrators reportedly pelted police officers with projectiles and threw garbage into the streets. Demonstrators in Egypt rail against brutality, man's death

Protesters in Egypt stage a demonstration over death of 28-year-old businessman. CNN's Ben Wedeman reports. Alexandria, Egypt (CNN) -- Mohamed ElBaradei, the former chief of the UN atomic agency and now an Egyptian reformist figure, joined thousands of people in Alexandria on Friday to protest the death of an Egyptian man and shine a light on police brutality. Khaled Said died after police dragged him out of an internet cafe in Alexandria on June 6 -- a fatality that has since become a lightning rod for human rights activists. Witnesses said two plainclothes police officers beat Said, 28, to death. Egyptian authorities said he died from asphyxiation after he swallowed a packet of drugs. A photograph of his pummeled face is on a Facebook page devoted to him. Video: Egyptians rail against beating death RELATED TOPICS Egypt Human Rights Policy Torture Police Human Rights Watch The circumstances behind Said's death are unclear. Police say he was wanted for theft and weapons possession and that he resisted arrest. Supporters say he was targeted for trying to expose official corruption. The government says it is still investigating the death. ElBaradei visited Said's family Friday to offer his condolences, went to Friday prayers at the Sidi Gaber mosque, and moved through the crowds of protesters as security forces stood guard at the demonstration. He told CNN that such a beating is a practice out of the Middle Ages. "I think the message should be clear," said ElBaradei, making ...

Occupy Europe: Thousands march in Germany & Spain

Thousands staged demonstrations against the power of banks and for greater democracy in German cities on Saturday, while several thousand Spanish teachers and parents marched in the capital Madrid to protest against austerity measures. In Berlin the second edition of the so-called 'Occupy Berlin' protest against the financial system drew several hundred demonstrators to a march which ended at the Reichstag building, Germany's parliament, on Saturday afternoon. Protesters chanted slogans against banks as they walked past Berlin landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate. After the massive turnout at anti-bank protests last weekend, Berlin police were out in force this Saturday but no serious incidents were reported. A similar demonstration was held in Frankfurt, where several thousand people protested against the power of the banks and for greater democracy. The demonstration was organised by 'Occupy Frankfurt' and the international pro-democracy, anti-globalisation movement 'attac'. The participants marched from the centre of Frankfurt to the European Central Bank building, and a rally was held in front of the Deutsche Bank building. Meanwhile in Spain, several thousand teachers marched in Madrid under banners reading: "Our hopes for the future were never so gloomy" and "For sale", referring to cuts in public education that they say will lead to fewer teachers being employed. Teachers went on strike in Madrid on Thursday, the sixth day of stoppages since classes began last ...

Thammasat University Massacre, 6th October 1976. Bangkok. Thailand.

WARNING: CONTAINS GRAPHIC SCENES. The 6 October 1976 Thammasat University Massacre เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา, was a crackdown on student protests against Thailand's right wing military government and the return of Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorna, a military dictator, an anti-communist and Prime Minister from 1963 to 1973. Previously, Thanom had left for exile in the United States following student and civil demands for a constitutional government that developed into the 14 October 1973 uprising. Thanom returned to become a novice monk at Wat Bowonivet, a high ranking royal wat, and resultingly it all kicked off. The students were shown to have "antogonised" the ultra right wing by performing a political play that featured a mock hanging (inspired by the murder of three demonstartors in Nakhom Pathom). The pictures of the performance were doctored by the Thai press, so that it appeared as if the students were mock hanging Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. The military, the police and far right paramilitarists responded by storming Thammasat University's Sanam Luang (Tha Prachan) campus to break up demonstrations, killing (officially) 40 plus students. However, the real death rate is known to be far, far higher. In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, the now deposed prime minister, Samak Sundravej suggested that only one student had been killed. He mocked the interviewer as being too young to remember the events, and as she was not there she was basing her ideas on "dirty histories ...

USA vs Democracy - Chicago Illinois 1968

On August 23 1968 demonstrators challenged the civil rights of liberty and freedom of the American constitution. The rally consisted of 20000 people from men, women and children. The government refused to grant a permit for the public to rally down to the National Convention Center. Protesters were determined to rally down to the National Convention Center anyway to show their opposition for the unpopular war in Viet Nam. The bridge to the National Convention Center was blocked by Armed national guards in gas mask. Determined to stop the the peaceful rally forcing the public to withdraw from their protest by releasing choking gas into the crouds. This caused the demonstrators to take the road down by the Hilton Hotel. That night the public demanded peace from the officers and soldiers until the authority engaged the demonstrators with bruteforce attacking unarmed civilians with choking gas, blunt weapons and military vehicles. The aftermath of this event resulted to several civilian casualty and arrests. ----------------------------------------- America... home of the free...? ----------------------------------------- - VNTIGER
