How to Follow the USDA MyPlate Dietary Guidelines


Forget the food pyramid. The US Department of Agriculture's nutrition guidelines are now called MyPlate. Here's how to adhere to the USDA recommendations.. To complete this how-to, you will need: Fruits Vegetables Grains Protein Dairy Smart choices Step 1: Picture a plate Picture a plate divided into 4 sections -- fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein. Fruit and vegetables should fill half the plate, with veggies taking up a little more room than fruits; divide the other side between grains and protein, with grains getting a bit more space. Now envision a small cup next to your plate, marked "Dairy." Not soda. Dairy. Go to choosemyplate.gov to find daily MyPlate requirements of each food group according to age, gender, and level of physical activity. Step 2: Mix it up Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables so your body gets a range of nutrients. Eating produce of different colors is an easy way to do so. Step 3: Choose your protein wisely Get your protein from omega-3 rich seafood; lean meats and poultry; eggs; nuts; seeds; and beans. Avoid processed meats like bacon and hot dogs. String beans are vegetables, not protein. Step 4: Eat more whole grains When filling a quarter of your plate with grains, make sure that at least half of them are whole grains, meaning they contain the entire grain kernel. The dietary supplement, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA), has been banned from sale at stores and commissaries in military bases across the United States after being associated with the death of two US soldiers who collapsed during physical training. All branches in the Department of Defense, as well as other organizations around the world, were apprehensive when claims of an over-the-counter supplement, Jack3D, was believed to test positive for illegal substances during urinalysis testing. Concerned military departments took immediate action by warning service members. But after testing the supplement, the claims proved to be false. Now, military organizations are taking a second look at Jack3D, as well as other weight-loss and bodybuilding supplements such as Oxy Elite Pro, Lipo 6 and Hemo Rate, which contain the popular amphetamine-like stimulant, Dimethylamylamine. N-acetyl cysteine, an amino acid, seems to restore extracellular glutamate concentration in the nucleus accumbens, which is often associated with reward in the brain, and therefore offers promise in reducing addictive behavior. Twenty-seven subjects (12 women and 15 men) with DSM-IV pathological gambling were treated in an eight-week open-label trial with n-acetyl cysteine. The participants were randomly chosen to receive either n-acetyl cysteine or placebo for six weeks. The researchers found that 60 percent of the participants reported having less urges to gamble. A slice of bread, for example, has about 100 food calories. If you were to add up all the calories you consumed in a day -- breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks -- that's your energy input. Your body uses this energy for everything from breathing to moving around. Everyone is different, but over the course of a day, an "average" man expends something like 1800 calories and an "average" woman around 1500 calories. Jon Palfreman is the producer of "Diet Wars."
