Diffusion and Osmosis

Clark College Tutoring and Writing Center tutor Joey Smokey introduces the concept of diffusion and osmosis, providing multiple definitions and explaining how the two processes work. Along the way, he explains things such as concentration gradients, semipermeable membranes, colloids and suspensions, and the effects of concentration on red blood cells in isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic solutions.

Diffusion

Diffusion is the spontaneous net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration in a given volume of fluid (either liquid or gas) down the concentration gradient.

Learn Biology: Cells—Osmosis vs. Diffusion

LIMITED TIME ONLY! Jasmine V App $1.99 mhlo.co Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth explains the difference between osmosis and diffusion. Osmosis vs. Diffusion --------------------------------------------------------------------- Passive transport is the movement of a substance across a permeable membrane, without additional energy. Diffusion and osmosis are both examples of "passive transport." The difference? Diffusion is the passive transport of solutes, like oxygen and carbon dioxide; osmosis is the passive transport of only water.c Natural Diffusion --------------------------------------------------------------------- Substances will naturally diffuse down a concentration gradient from high to low. Think of it like a bus - as more people get on, the concentration rises; when you get to a bus stop, half the people get off and the concentration decreases until an equilibrium is achieved.c Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com

All About Diffusion

This is the latest release in the RealTraps "See and Hear" video lecture series. Most people have no way to hear what diffusors do or how they sound in a room. So this video explains diffusion in plain terms with no math, then lets you hear an acoustic guitar recorded in close proximity to five different surface types - a QRD diffusor, a poly diffusor, absorption, a bare wall, and a typical bookcase. If you have technical questions about this video that require a reply, please do not post them here as comments. YouTube is not a good venue for a technical exchange. Please post your questions in whatever audio forum you know me from, or post in my acoustics forum at www.musicplayer.com.

large diffusion cloud chamber with radon gas double-decaying!

awesome demonstration of a massive diffusion cloud chamber - with normal background radiation vs. americium 241 vs. the epic RADON 220 gas! just wow! ps: yeah, i know i accidentally said "Radium 220" instead of "Radon 220" once - and that i said "half time" instead of "half life" a couple of times. sorry about that, i was just drained after that awesome day at the museum and thus, unable to concentrate properly.

Diffusion Curves

Video of the Diffusion Curves, from SIGGRAPH 2008. The video presents the "Diffusion Curve" primitives for the creation of soft gradients and blur in vector graphics, along with an image analysis method to automatically extract Diffusion Curves from photographs. Authors: Alexandrina Orzan, Adrien Bousseau, Holger Winnemöller, Pascal Barla, Joëlle Thollot, David Salesin artis.imag.fr

Diffusion

Diffusion gives you four interactive animations to simulate the common classroom experiments. Youll use it to: •Show how common observations of diffusion relate to the particle model •Show how diffusion occurs in liquids and gases •Show how diffusion explains what happens when coloured crystals dissolve •Explain why a liquid evaporates more quickly into vacuum than into a gas •Explain how and why temperature affects the rate at which diffusion occurs.
Easy Starburst Diffusion Filter Effect in Photoshop - Week 45

Watch in HQ www.youtube.com In days gone by I owned an extensive range of special effect filters for use on camera. But with the power of digital photography behind me they've dissappeared from my kit bag. In this video tutorial digital expert Gavin Hoey www.gavtrain.com shows a quick and simple way to recreate a starburst filter effect.

Ziploc Bag Diffusion

A Ziploc bag of Lugol's iodine solution is placed into a beaker of starch water. The video shows 1 frame per 30 seconds for a total of 20 ... all » minutes. The iodine is able to diffuse throught the bag but not the starch nor the water (the bag acts as a selectively permeable membrane). When the iodine comes into contact with the starch water, a dark blue/purple color forms.
Facilitated Diffusion

Nathan, Clinton, and Jonathan teams up to bring you this presentation on Facilitated Diffusion, a process that involves the transferring of particles between the two sides of a cell membrane via proteins. Diffusion of Dye in Agar

I had a random desire to post another video, and this was the first one I found on my computer. Some crystals of Potassium Permanganate (MW=158) on the left and Methylene Blue (MW=320) on the right. Time-lapse video w/ images taken every 30 seconds, but I don't remember how long this was in realtime. Probably a couple hours? Then I sped up the playback.
Advection Diffusion Equation

The advection-diffusion equation, essentially the heat equation with an extra term, accounts for the distribution of, for example, a chemical released into a stream of water. Hence, the chemical diffuses as it is advected by the velocity of the medium. Unlike the heat equation, which can be solved easily through separation of variables, the advection-diffusion requires the Fourier transform - but its solution is in the form of the error function. Because the solution is definite, I used a very simple matrix-loop method to build a sequence of surfaces.
