The aim is to dig either the deepest or the most creative hole. Participants also try to wear the most original costume. Over a thousand people gathered on the outskirts of Tokyo on Sunday with their shovels to dig for the top prize. It is the Japan All-National Hole Digging Competition. The contest, now in its 11th year, attracts participants from all over the country. Prizes are awarded not only for the deepest hole, but also for most creative hole and most original costume worn during the digging. All sorts of people take part in the contest. Fence Installation Tips: Layout and Digging Post Holes
Lowe's home improvement expert, Mike Kraft, demonstrates how to properly layout your new fencing and how to dig post holes. First, make some batterboards to support the fencing layout strings. Then, drive the batterboard into the ground to start the fence layout, usually at the corner of a house or hardscape feature. Use mason's string to mark the line where the fence posts will be set. Also, make sure to account for rails and pickets when lining up with the edge of your house. Then, measure for each section of your fence, using batterboards and mason's string to mark the layout. Lastly, review your layout and adjust for full panels. After reviewing, you can drive stakes into the positions where your fence posts will be installed. Mike Kraft then shows the next step in the installation process, digging fence post holes. First, mark the center for the first post on the ground. It should be set back half the width of the post from the string. Then, you can begin digging the fence post holes along your layout. If you need extra help digging a post hole, try using a power earth auger. The power auger is an easy and effective way to create new fence post holes. You need to make sure you have the j-bolt assembly done before you start mixing the concrete... so you might as well do it now. First remove all but one nut on each j-bolt. Then run the last nut all the way done and tighten. Now place each j-bolt in the plate run another nut down and hand tighten... point all j-bolts to the center and finish tightening. Set the assembly aside and start measuring and marking in preparation to dig. On this particular job I had three wires to look out for. Electric, cable and an invisible fence wire which in this case was impossible to avoid and I cut it. I started digging carefully to find the cable since they are generally only a couple inches down. As you can see I got lucky and found the cable wire and pulled it up to be reburied later by the cable company. Now, outline the digging area with your spud bar then use your shovel to skim the grass like a piece of sod and continue to dig slowly and parallel to the driveway until you locate the electric. The real luck for me in this case was the electric wire was only a few inches down and I was also able to locate it quickly. When you know there are wires below... ALWAYS... dig slowly and parallel to the driveway to avoid shearing the wires as you dig. After the wires are located... you can start digging faster. I use the spud bar to dig by loosening the dirt and a spade <b>...</b>

Spend your time wisely! Once night hits you MUST venture into the hole, never to return to the surface again! 2. You can gather any resource you find top side, but venturing into any other caves (for iron mostly) is not allowed. Sunlit caves are allowed. 3. You must not break ground on the 404 gravel until you are ready to enter the cave. You are intended to be finding shelter for the first night, digging the gravel, and discovering the cave. Once you break ground on the gravel, you must enter the cave. 4. Once you enter the cave, you must descend all the way to the bottom! The waterfall has swept you into the deepest parts of the cave. 5. No torches! If you whine about why you can't use torches, just STFU. Real men use lava for light anyway! How to Dig a Geoduck (shovel)
Alright this is a little tutorial on the two man railroad spike technique perfected by me and my Dad. All you need is two people, two similarly shaped shovels, and a place to dig. Allign your shovels on the same side of the siphon about two inches to avoid accidental decapitation as you dig. With each person digging as straight down as possible in the same hole, alternate digs between each other, like the old mickey mouse cartoon beak-beak-beaking away on the railroad tracks. Be sure to keep the spade pointed straight down, avoiding the temptation to angle toward where you think the shell might be. Remember the Geoduck is stuck in place. He (or she) cannot run. It is the sand you are racing against. If you dig straight down you decrease the chance of your own weight caving in the hole, and if you have two people, the water that might otherwise leak in and make that swampy soup that is almost impossible to penetrate with shovels, is eliminated by the quickness of the two people working in tandem. After you get about three and a half feet deep (you can use your eyes to measure or you can place a piece of tape on the shaft of the shovel so that you will know when the tape reaches the beach level it is time to jump in) it is time to get dirty. Reach in as far as you can and search for the shell through the wall of the hole you have dug. Once you feel it, if you can get your fingertips around the fleshy part that is protruding from within you will be able to shell from it's <b>...</b>

This is a documentation of Spirit Mountain Herbal Gardens in Arizona 3/21/2008 Caliche (mineral) Caliche is a hardened deposit of calcium carbonate. This calcium carbonate cements together other materials, including gravel, sand, clay, and silt. It is found in aridisol and mollisol soil orders. Caliche occurs worldwide, generally in arid or semi-arid regions, including in central and western Australia, in the Kalahari Desert, in the High Plains of the western USA, and in the Sonoran Desert. Caliche is also known as hardpan, calcrete, kankar (in India), or duricrust. The term caliche is Spanish and is originally from the Latin calx, meaning lime. Caliche is generally light colored but can range from white to light pink to reddish-brown, depending on the impurities present. It is generally found on or near the surface, but it can be found in deeper subsoil deposits as well. The layers can vary from a few inches to feet thick, and multiple layers can exist in a single location. In northern Chile and Peru, caliche refers to the nitrate salt deposits of the Atacama Desert. Caliche can also refer to various clayey deposits in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Colombia. In addition, it has been used to describe some forms of quartzite, bauxite, kaolinite, laterite, chalcedony, opal, and soda niter. Similar material, but composed of calcium sulfate rather than calcium carbonate, is called gypcrust or gypcrete ("Gyp-Crete" is also a trademarked brand name).
